After following a lead from this forum I'm about to buy an engine hoist off the guys in Cork (sjebbandsons.com) - cracking value - 2 ton hoist plus engine stand can be bought for €245!!

My question is fairly specific. I want the hoist to take a 2.8l engine and transmission out of a '68 Mercedes 280 SE. Will I need a hoist with a two ton capacity or would a one ton hoist be sufficient?

In fairness the two ton lift is great value, however it does require more storage space, hence my question. Space is at a premium and if I could do the job with the more compactable (when in storage) 1 ton hoist I would!!

So, will a one ton hoist be sufficient?

    Any input would be great.

    Cheers.

You need to check what the capacity is at full extension - most have them have an adjustable arm for greater reach, but the further out you extend it, the lower the safe capacity of the crane. So your 1 ton crane might safely lift a lot less at full extension. I'd go for the 2 ton if it was me...

Edit: just looked at the site - the 1 ton crane has only a capacity of 250kg at full extension....

You get a free engine stand with the 2 ton crane as well. Has to be worth a few euro on adverts.ie or donedeal if you don't want it.

You'll need the full reach to keep it balanced taking it out,so you'll need the 2 ton.
Having said that i've removed V8s complete with transmissions on the 250kg:eek: but I stand well back and I know i'm taking a risk, not to be recommended.

A small block chevy without the trans weighs about 260kg with steel heads.

    Thanks for the input.

I went ahead this afternoon and ordered the 2 ton hoist - better safe than sorry. I just have to clear a bit more space in the garage now!!

I also did a swap, instead of taking the engine stand (I already have one) they swapped it out for a booster battery pack - very handy as my old one packed up during the last cold spell.

Seems like a very good service, I ordered today and they will have it at my door in Dublin tomorrow.

Can't ask for more than that.

    :D:D

yep, it arrived this morning. i was in work at the time and thank god wifie was not around either (one less spend she needs to know about ;)) The courier (nightline) waited 15 mins until I got there which was good. Its a heavy enough lump and it came in too boxes. I'd love to hit the garage this evening but unfortunately I have to go to the pub :D instead to 'wet a babies head.

Weather will be good tomorrow, that means the kids can play out the back and I'll mind the garage!!

That's good news - nice to know that everything went as promised.

Better to take a proper run at it anyway tomorrow.

Don't know if anything extra came with it, but chain with big links and those oval-shaped screw in fasteners are a much better certainty for lifting than rope.

Just spotted this. I was (am) the guy that first posted regarding this hoist.
I bought the 1 ton version but am really only using it for minis so it is ideal for me.
I would also have recommended the 2 ton hoist for your job as the one i have needs to be 1/2 extended (500kg) to get the mini engine in and out.
Again I have to give a thumbs-up to the suppliers as they are better value than buying from the UK......for a change !!!
