Sorry if this the wrong forum but I wanted to go anon.

Can anyone tell me about exercises to make my ugly double chin disappear?

I have lost a lot of weight over the past few months (I was slightly obese at one stage :/) but my double chin remains.

I've seen a video on youtube about standing up dead straight, lifting your head back as far as it will go and closing your mouth slowly. Does this work?

    Thanks for any help.

You cannot 'target' weight from one area of your body that you particularly want to lose. General weight loss should eventually result in a reduction of fat around your chin, but you can't choose where your body burns fat from.

Exercises like the one you mention have absolutely no effect whatsoever. Think about the sentence you wrote describing the 'exercise' and you'll realise that there is no way that it could have any effect on your chin.

Not exactly an excersise but seemingly if you repeatedly push your tongue against the roof of your mouth its helps to tighten 'turkey neck' -I don't know if it works but when you look in the mirror while doing that you can see the neck muscles contracting!

I would just advise you to go running.
I've heard that doing exercises for that sort of thing increases the amount of wrinkles on your face.
Don't think there is any real quick fix, just do the proper exercise, diet thing etc.

I have exercises that i do that i was taught my an old nun in school. I dont have a double chin, but of course i have no idea if it is because of the exercises or not!

Anyway, when lying on your back in bed at night or in the morning, put your forearm over your forehead and press back. At the same time try and raise your jaw towards your chest. You should feel a pull on your jawline.

Do 30 in the morning and 30 at night.

As i say though, i cant give any guarantees that they work.

Would weights help? Doing weights for your shoulders might tighten up the neck area!

Could be wrong, just a thought!

You may unfortunately just be in possession of a soft chin which will continue to appear "double" until you lose a lot of weight, even beyond your target "healthy weight" - often well into the low 20's of BMI. However, at a certain point (which you've probably already reached) it will stop being a permanent double chin , and only appear whenever you look down. Rest assured that most people get a double chin when they look down or open their mouth wide, there's no need to obsess over it.

It's all to do with the structure of your face. Some people are horrifically overweight and never have a double chin.

    To answer the original question

    running
    swimming
    cycleing

    any kind of cardio

double chin is the first thing to go.

So much misinformation in this thread. The first reply is the best.

Just keep doing what you are doing to lose bodyfat. It will eventually go from that area but it may be the very last place you lose it. Everyone loses fat from different places first and you cannot target a specific area.

Sleep in bed with no pillow.

here are some good exercises. As a qualified personal trainer I have some experience in this as when I was in my early 20s I was also getting a double chin and managed to beat it. While it is true that in general you can't spot reduce fat there are a few very good exercise that do make a difference. The thing is, you need to do them consistently. Every day for the first few weeks and then maybe 3-4 times a week after you start to notice a difference.

    1. Warm up your neck by gently looking from left to right (move in a slow controlled motion). Do this at least 10 times. It would also help if your environment is warm so its best to do a little warm up in the winter.

    2. lift your head up and pick out a point on the ceiling. hold this position for about 30 seconds. You should feel discomfort at the front of your neck, not pain. Stop immediately if you experience any pain.

    3. Next, standing straight, tilt your head to the right as if you are trying to touch your ear to your shoulder. You should feel a stretch on the left side of your face. Hold for about 30 seconds. Again, do it gently.

    4. Do the same on the opposite side.

    5. Finally, make sure noone is around when you do this one; great for relieving tension. Open your mouth as wide as it will go and hold for 30 seconds.

    6. Finish off with a strectch to the left and right and up and down again.

Let me know how you get on!

of course I should have added to that and repeated what has already been said in relation to aerobic exercise. Try and get out fast walking 3-5 days a week for at least 40 minutes and you will get great benefit!

As a last resort, I would consider surgical options.
