Advice on tiling kitchen/dining/living and hallway

Apologies if some of my questions have already been answered elsewhere on the boards but I've done some searching and haven't found advice on my exact queries yet!
I'm in the process of making a decision on tiles for hallway,Kitchen and possibly Dining and living room (kitchen/dining/living is one big open plan room with a lot of glass (ceiling to floor) in the living room end so looking for some advice.
Firstly I'm getting a hi-gloss PVC kitchen in cream with walnut coloured worktop so what colour and finish of tile would you recommend? Would a cream polished porcelain tile be too much shine  with the hi-gloss kitchen?
BTW I'm all for low maintenance (have three young children so these tiles will get lots of abuse over the coming years!) so maybe a tile in a matte finish (not sure what the correct terminology is!) would be better? I know so many people who are unhappy with their tiles (atually I don't recall ever hearing anyone say that they're happy with theirs but maybe I just didn't notice before I started thinking about my own!) so I'm putting lots of thought into getting mine right first time roung!

Secondly what do you all think of tiles in a living room space? We'll have underfloor heating so they won't feel cold but will they look very cold/clinical? The alternative that I'm considering is tiling the kitchen and hallway and putting wooden floors in dining/living area (there is a breakfast bar in the kitchen so maybe tile as far as it and then start the wooden floor)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    amesoc

We've just tiled our refurb right through the kitchen and living room out to the rear patio door with shiny porcelain. Looks fantastic, and as you say, with the underfloor heating there's no warmth issue. I would advise that things will appear a little noisy unless you get some fabrics around the room somewhere!
