I just got a pair of aftermarket speakers, 40watt rms and total 160watt each.

My car stereo is 50watt x4
they are for the front speakers
when I turn up the volume it sounds terrible, full of static and its not even up all the way. Very muffelled sound from the speakers. They sound worse then the stock speakers which were only 5watts each. Is this normal? Do I need to amplify the new speakers more??
    thanks

Bring them back and get a reputable make ;)

I'm sure if you search you'll find a lot of posts about Ripspeed and Halfraudsfords in general.

The problem isnt neccessarily your speakers, its your headunit sending a clipped signal distorting them. Your headunit is 4x50max, its rms value is about 4x12w.

Basically your headunit is struggling to provide adequate power to the speakers causing distortion and clipping when you crank it up, eventually this is going to shag the speakers if it hasn't done so already.

Your best option if you have a few euro to spare is buy a 2 channel amp and run the speakers off that and it'l be a world of a difference

are you saying that the fact that they are ripspeed means nothing. I actually already returned them- I was gonna get some pioneers from ebay or something (will the same thing happen?)
What wattage should I get so I don't have to get an amp. 50watt max or less ?

http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/kenwood-kfce1062-speakers-10cm-3way-flush-mount-speaker-system-p-10009.html those speakers will work fine with your headunits output , if you like you can throw an amp at them http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/alpine-pmxt320-channel-amplifier-p-9831.html

if your headunit is ripspeed or from ebay and delivered from china i would say thats your problem

To be fair to the ripspeed speakers they dont sound half bad with a good amp. Kevlar woofers for tight low end, you would be surprised at those KRK esque yokes. They seem to be less efficient with the signal coming into them so you need more level going into them to achieve volume but then your amp craps out. Rule of thumb, at least in the audio engineering world is to have your amp at least twice as powerful as the speaker. But probably for cars its less then that in case you decide to max it.

Those ripspeeds didnt fit in my car though.

different in cars as its a sealed grounded entity so signal loss over cable lengths isnt anywhere near home / PA audio, also the input level is more uniform, for instance you often leave the PA amp on max power, never max it and normally have the mixer output at a low level , a lot of signal lost from the mixer to amp then amp to speakers, which necessitates the power, with car audio matching or going a little over is normally the best way

I get you, I had a good feeling it wouldnt be the same rule of thumb. My main point was about the efficiency of the ripspeeds in the first place. The magnets used in the speakers dont seem to be too great.

yeah , ripspeed and all 6x9s are a big no-no , the ripspeed speakers have a high peak level but a useless rms power, just means the cones are tough but the magnets are useless, the ripspeed speakers are geared to pump bass and kill mid and highs , awful yokes alltogether

Hmm, I couldn't get bass or mid or highs. . . just static and fluff .. wouldn''t of mind if they worked some, not like youd expect much for 25€ just that they work. I ordered the clarion 40watt x2 hopefully they'll do the trick

yeah id say the speakers were just faulty mate, even if it turns out to be the head unit atleast your on the right track with a set of clarions

    Hi All,
got sold a pair of Ripspeed 6 X 9's last night in Halfords, am starting to regret it already.
what do ye reckon - return them for something more reputable?
    Thanks
