ITunes/Removal of Duplicate Songs Issue

    Hi there,

I went through the process of deleting some duplicate songs from ITunes last night through Duplicate Cleaner. The problem I've encountered is that when I now launch ITunes, Itunes is still showing these songs under my total number of songs, and is also reflecting them under duplicate songs. I'm positive that the duplicates have been removed as when I click on any of them to play, itunes asks me if I want to locate the song.

Can anyone tell me what has caused this, and if there is an easy way of deleting these? The duplicate songs are definitiely gone, so it seems to be something to do with Itunes directly. I don't want to have delete them manually, as there was 11000 duplicates.

    Thanks in advance,
    Conor.

Couldn't give you any advice on that but be warned as I used a programme to delete duplicates and get the album artwork and it brought a virus onto the computer.

When you deleted them you may have just got rid of them from your library... not your hard drive... they may be in the trash or recycle bin. You need to be careful when removing duplicates as it only picks up on duplicate songs and artists... so you could be removing a song that is needed to make up an album that you may have on another compilation.

Isn't there a 'delete/remove duplicates' option in playlists?

Maybe put all the files in a playlist and them chose to remove them?

Or delete everything in your library and reimport everything...

Thanks Banquo. I had a look on Itunes and didn't see this.I copied an album across this evening to a playlist and only the actual songs copied across, so it seems that I can't do that there. Anyway, I wouid still have to delete the dups manually. In terms of reimporting everything, I added about 3000 more songs last night. I dropped and damaged the external HD which had my library on it (which was clever) so I'm having to check what is/isn't already on Itunes.

Big Gig, I took all of the files from the recyle bin and have saved them to a folder. In relation to the deleting the dupes, the programme I ran was specifically to the direcory that my music is stored ie /itumes/music, and i think i'm ok in terms of somgs from compilatons etc by the criteria I used when running the search.

The problem that I have is that pretty much every second track on my songs list has an exclamation mark ie Itunes can find the file.

Having to go througn the process manually of deleting them would be a nightmare. I got through about 15O odd last night before I lost patiance.

    Thanks again for the responses.

    Conor

I reckon whatever programme you used didn't tell your iTunes library that it was deleting the songs. Your iTunes is still looking for the deleted songs and that's why you get an exclamation mark. Try using the 'show duplicates' function in iTunes and mess around with the way the duplicates are sorted by clicking the header of song/album etc then you may be able to delete a chunk of the ones with the esclamation marks.

I used a program called tidysongs and it sorted duplicates and missing songs in a 20gb iTunes db.
