Desire Signal Loss and Sim Problems

Got my Desire about two weeks ago, absolutely beautiful phone, so far. Signal reception on it is generally fairly bad, today I lost signal completely. Since c.2pm I've had no reception and a 'Limited Service' message on the phone. When I try and manually select to connect to the O2 network I (eventually) get a message saying my O2 sim is not registered on the O2 network.

Any ideas other then a hard reset?

This is a fairly common problem with HTC's globally, particularly on the Meteor network in Ireland (you are the first I've heard of on O2 in Ireland). When it happens you need to switch to Airplane Mode (hold down the on/off button until the options appear) then then switch it off, it will reconnect to your network. To get a warning when this happens install No Coverage Alert from Market Place, it will tell you when this happens so you shouldn't miss any calls. At present you need to switch it on manually each time you switch on your handset but the developer is working on it.

Also report the problem to O2 via their forum and ask them to follow up with HTC, each provider needs to do this to get the problem resolved.

    Hope this helps.

Cheers, tried that but no joy, tried a hard reset too but no joy with that either.

Not happy reading this. Was having problems the last day in Dun Laoghaire, Vodafone said there was a cell in Dun Laoghaire that was undergoing repair and this was the cause of the bad signal (I had to stand outside to make the call!)... it seems fine now, but I have been cut off once or twice from calls too with no explanation.

All I can say is that it is a well known issue with HTC's, something to do with the handover to 3g. I know Meteor are (and have been) looking into this for some time and it isn't as bad on the Desire compared to the Hero (could be because the Desire is running 2.1).

Just recommend you post on the Vodafone forum so the techs there can bring it to the attention of HTC (the more providers that report the problem the more pressure on HTC to fix it).

Just install No Signal Alert, at least you will know when it drops off.

Is there a point in me getting a replacement Desire or should I go for another handset? If I go into the same area with the phone will this just happen again?

I definitely don't want the hassle of getting a new handset or replacement desire myself. I'll test it out for another while and see how it fares. If it's something that's being looked into and can be fixed with a firmware upgrade or something that'll be fine :)

Yeah, if that works, the problem is that my phone is still completely useless so I have to bring it back to CPW. I don't really fancy having to go to CPW every time it does this and God only knows when the patch will be available.

Just back from CPW, apparently my sim was 2.5G?? and not 3 and this is what was causing the signal problems.

Hopefully it is just a sim problem and it's sorted now. My reception for all signals is a whole lot better now.

@Cormie, check what sim you have as it may just be a case of upgrading it.

Hopefully that will solve your problem but it is a well documented problem for android based phones (not just HTC). How was your sim only 2.5g, was it an old one from an existing handset?

The problem you describe was a problem for android not HTC, secondly I havn't seen it reported at all for the Desire or other 2.1 phone, primarlily 1.5 phones like hero.

Yeah, was from an old phone, was advised that it would be fine for the Desire though. How wrong and not the end of the problem. Now I have to try and get the phone re-set up for internet etc.

It has been reported on the Desire, have experienced it a couple of times myself (although rare), the xda developers website also has numerous threads on it. But I do agree it is an Android rather than a HTC problem.
