Playing in my first ISC on Sunday at the K-Club.

I assume there'll be some sort of prize for both best gross and best nett.

    What can I expect?

Are these things taken fairly seriously by the participants?

Obi - will see you there!
Looking forward to it myself -- I can tell you I won't be taking it too seriously. It's the start of a weeks holidays so I'll be in a relaxed mood.

    It's on the Palmer course.
I'm out at 10.20 Tipp-Boy, just look for the fat bloke in the awful shorts.

Anyone know if it's likely to be off the whites or the blues?

played there on Thursday off the whites,i can't imagine it'll be off blues, the whites are not bad and they're fair,on some holes like 17 they're well forward, and others like 18 they're near the back

    Whats the round costing?

I was going to play in this but thought it was just too steep. €75 i think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 424 ✭✭Obni

    €15 for members.
So, I reckon it's €15 entry fee plus €60 green fee for visitors.
Quite reasonable for the K-Club on a day when it should be set-up for a tough test.
    Weather's looking good. :D

Hope I don't win Saturday's medal in Druid's Heath and get cut by too many shots.

Obni - how did you get on?
I can tell you I certainly didn't break any course records, +5 nett!
The course was in great shape and the weather was superb - really was a great day.

Apart from nearly bursting into flames due to the heat, I really enjoyed the day. Finished +3 nett or +19 gross, 9 of which came from the 4 par 3s! :(

    I parred the index 1 (7th hole) with a drive, 5 iron, bunker shot to 2 feet & a putt. Then had a f**king 5 at the 150 yd tiddler par 3 8th, aaarrrgggh!

Would have to give the K-Club 10 out of 10 for the condition and presentation of the course. The greens were immaculate.

I thought that index 1 (hole 7) was a fantastic challenge. I made par too but the guy I was playing with had an 11 (2 in the lake, 5th behind a tree), 8th in the greenside lake. Felt really sorry for him. I left the course thinking I had a lot of missed opportunities. I had 2 triples and alot of silly bogies. Anyway it was a great day out and really enjoyed it. My shot of the day was on the 18th - from the green side bunker I hit the s/w about 60ft to right beside the pin, a nice 5 footer for par --- walked off the 18th in a great mood.

One of the guys with me was level par after 5 holes and then had a 9 at the 6th (3 balls in the water) followed by a 10 at the 7th (3 balls in the water). From level par to +11 in two holes. Ouch!

The 2nd shot is a lot further than it looks

Just booked in for the ISC's in Mullingar on the 6th and Edmondstown on the 8th. Never played Mullingar before, but I know Edmondstown like the back of my hand. €20 for each competition. Goodbye society golf forever.

What exactly do you mean by getting "sliced 3 shots"? Does this refer to his handicapp ??

    Yes.
Scratch cups are singles strokeplay tournaments where the best gross score wins the trophy.
However, your handicap gets adjusted for (each) 18 holes in the usual way so the guy in the example shoots an 81 gross off 18 handicap. With adjustment for the 10 on a par 5 that gives his adjusted gross of 79 and adjusted nett of 61 and a handicap reduction of around 3.0 shots down to 15... which to be honest would have only been a good start in my opinion!

For those who don't know.......Adjusted score means for handicap purposes you are only ever allowed 2 over on a hole, anything over that is disregarded. It is called the Clause 19 adjustment. You can see it if you log into your Golfnet account.

For example if you score 9 on a par five, you are allocated a 7 for handicap purposes. If you gross score for the round was 89, for handicap purposes your score is taken as 87 gross. If you are playing off 17, your net score is now 70 which could mean a 0.6 reduction in your handicap (assuming Standard Scratch for the competition was 72). However many people come off the course thinking their net score was 72 and they will not be cut and are confused when they are.

It is there to reflect a decent round spoiled by one or two bad holes - if you were level par for 16 holes and took quadruple bogeys on the closing 2 holes, you would end up 8 over par and maybe expect to get 0.1 back but Clause 19 prevents this. It also reflects the stableford system where no points are scored for anything over a double bogey!

    Not strictly true either.
The score you are adjusted to is the nett double bogey of that hole.
So on a par 5, a nett double bogey for an 18 handicapper is an 8.. for a scratch golfer it's a 7, for a 22 handicapper it might be a 9 depending on the stroke index of that hole.

Absolutely true - my apologies for the poor explanation! Omitted that and was just thinking of my own handicap I guess!
