Varies from distro to distro but there is usually an update tool that acquires packages for you.

there is plenty of info about it on ubuntu webpage.
You have to tell your linux (I presume you are using ubuntu)to download non free software from adobe webpage (dont worry thats just the name they are for free).
    Instructions are easy enough.

The acer ones came with their own distro, so it's not as easy as ubuntu. I'll move this to the UNIX forum.

Is it Linpus Linux? Based on Fedora according to Wikipedia, so you can probably update with yum or get an rpm package, right?

    yum -y update

Without knowing what type of Linux you are running we can't really be of much help.

To be honest I'd recommend moving off their version of Linpus Linux and perhaps trying the ubuntu netbook remix

That said, you can get the latest versions of the installed software from
    Preferences>Live Update

Though it's based on Fedora Synaptic is present and so you should be able to add Firefox 3.6 from Synaptic or any other application in their repositry

    Totally agree with skrynesaver.
    Linpus is dated and unmaintained.
I have one of these machines and I love it.
Best choices at the moment for an OS for the Acer are

    Ubuntu Netbook Remix
    Easy Peasy or
    Jolicloud

If you have the time and bandwidth, I'd suggest downloading the three and trying them
off a USB stick to see which you prefer. If you just want a computer that works go get easypeasy. Daft name, but works out of the box and will already have flash etc installed.
