Clunking sound MGB

Hope someone hear might be able to help me with this.

The MGB has developed a clunking noise when quickly dropping off revs.

For example, if you bring her up to say 3/4000rpm then drop her off quick there is a short distinct clunking noise. There is not blue/white smoke coming from the exhaust so I dont think there are any internal problems.

Any suggestions? I had a look around the engine bay and nothing appears to be loose or rattle-able.

    Thanks.

Doesnt matter what gear it is in when it happens, also when braking hard. So could be mounts alright. I will have to check again tonight.

Had the car sitting in the garage there just trying to investigate. Put car in neutral revved up to 3000 then dropped on quickly and CLUNK.

Sounds like mounts, if you get someone else to rev it and you have a look at the engine, you should see it twisting in the mounts.

Thanks for that. I doubt its the diff or rear axle, as if happens when the car is in neutral and stationary.

Its not the mounts (or so I can see) thinking it might be the exhaust or something loose somewhere.
