We're going into the studio next month which has some really great mics.
thinking here about overheads they have
    2x414's
    2x u87's
    4x km184
    2x coles 4038
    2x AT 4040sm

which would ye recommend as oh's on a 4 piece kit and also which would be best for room mics out of the above list.
    thanks

Have a listen when you get there to what suits the song, drummer, kit etc etc...

the thing is we're only there for a 12 hour overnight session so we're gonna be hard presed for time, might take 3 or 4 out of that list and concentrate on them and test them on the kit
    thanks paul

    Let the engineer decide then.

If you're in hurry- kit mics: 414 for a true sound, 4038 for a cool sound. 184 the room. Personal pref tho, they're all great mics. But don't just throw up an AB pair... a good mic badly positioned is always worse than a cheap mic well positioned. And where in the room is the kit going? More important than mic choice.

Wouldnt be to worried then let the engineer decide as if you wanted the best you would just about get the kit ready to record in 6 hours :D from dif heads/shells/tuning etc.. :D

all depends on the room and the song but at a quick glance i'd go for 87's on overs and the coles as a st room pair.

    Cheers for the feedback lads.
Yeah was looking at the 414's or u87's
also heard that larry mullen uses the 4040's live and the odd time in studio so might try it if time allows.

    Thanks:D

aforementioned L.Mullen Jr has been known to have a pair of SM-58's over the kit too, so it really depends on the kit, cymbals the player and what the room is like...

Anybody here giving you advice doesn't know the room either, and is just guessing.
...except that "the room" has been pointed to as an issue several times already...

    is just guessing.

you really should be taking his advice over what you've read online...

    Yup !

    Assuming there is an engineer...

As has letting the engineer decide on mic choice, but you haven't pointed that out as having been repeated in the thread, so I don't see the problem.
Is that number 26 from Thirty Eight Ways to Win an Argument
