Just bought a PS3 at last and want to set up to go online. I have an inactive phone-line in the gaff so must get that set-up. Who is the best internet provider for online gaming eg Eircom, BT or whoever and what package should I get? Also is wireless the best way to go? Thanks in advance.

They all have their merits, I wouldn't say one is better than the other, I'm eircom and I never had a problem with them, if possible a wired connection is always best and 3Mb or over is a good speed for gaming

i use eircom and its fine. once you get the router set up right theres no hassle connecting to games or friends. i use the wireless connection too.

i had no phoneline (and didnt need the extra expense of a line rental to eircom) so i chose UPC (NTL) and got a 10 mg connection and a wireless router came free with that. its been generally faultless with the exception of one phase where the connection would drop out or just be very weak for periods of up to an hour, but they came out replaced the wiring gave me a new wireless router and it seems to have sorted it for me anyway.

I used to have the ps3 wireless and now have it wired, and the difference i noticed was since going wired, download times are far less and i get a four bar connection on COD now.

Having a connection over the tv cable suits me better than having a phoneline commitment and another bill. you should head to the broadband forum on boards, you'll get more info about providers etc there

I use a wired Eircom 3MB connection at home for my PS3 and it's grand most of the time. Only a couple of times a week I'd reckon I might have some problems but that's down to where I'am living.

    Thanks for the replies.

Is it possible with O2 mobile or am i just wasting my time as it is too slow? I just plugged in an ethernet cable from my PS3 directly to my laptop but am getting no IP address. Do I need a router or something for this or would I be just better getting a wireless router from Eircom? Thanks

Eircom are good but expensive. I was paying 75euro a month for a 7mb line. I dropped it to a 3mb line for 61 and noticed no difference in gaming. Changed my package again to get it down to 55(with a different call bundle). Hated the phone connection in the year i had eircom i made 0 calls and received only 2 both wrong numbers:D.

Vodafone have just come in and are taking over some of the eircom customers. I have just swapped today with out any hassle and have the same package for 40euro flat fee. So i would check them out if you are getting the land line option. Its the same product Eircom have only 15 euro a month cheaper.

If you are going the land line route id say go with vodafone or eircom the others can be patchy if something goes wrong. Other guys like Digiweb are an option.

But UPC are your best bet if you can get them to not have to bother with a land line.

UPC UPC UPC! If you can get fibre optic, bite their hand off for it!

I have Sky and also the Sky HD so kinda want to keep that as I dont think UPC have Sky Sports/Movies on HD.

Eircom are upgrading their service, so you will get 8Mb BB/phone bundle for €55/month if you are in a major town over the next few months
