Doing my head in...constant USB on/off noise

    Hey,
My Dell XPS m1330 keeps making the USB connect/disconnect noise even though I'm not taking anything in or out of the slots.

I think it has something to do with my webcam however, because in the past when I'd tilt the screen, the webcam light would flash and it'd make the USB noise as well.

Now the webcam seems to have stopped working, and the USB noise is clicking on and off quite often. Would this be a wiring problem?

    Many thanks

That sounds exactly like a wiring problem. It's probably the connection between the mobo and the camera cable that has become loose meaning it finds it and drops it repeatedly. You could go into device manager and disable it completely to stop it from happening? Although you wont have easy access to a web cam then!
Alternatively you could open it up and find the cable and see if you can pop it back in. Although doing this is obviously risky, i mean i'd probably chance it! But there isa chance of messing things up. I've done it before with a few dells without issue. You can find disassembly guides online.

I don't know if I'd want to go messing with internals myself, I'd like the challenge but the risk of botching it are probably not worth just getting an expert to do it for me. How much would I expect to pay?

Ironically I'm about to have a site developed that is totally based around webcams :o

Taking apart the screen on a Dell I would think would be relatively easy. A few weeks ago I had to fo the same thing to my pavillion because the power cable to the screen was loose: all better now. No more random on/off ;D

you can likely google the steps to install/replace an m1330 webcam, just follow that and make sure all the wiring is good.
