Im 27, female and having huge problems with my wisdom teeth, Iv got 3 broken through butmy top right is the worst

My top right wisdon tooth is fully broken through my gum,
Its a full massive tooth growing side ways through my gum towards my cheek.
Im in sooo much pain the past year and cant take it any more.

Im on the medical card waiting list since november 09 and iv still another 11 months till it comes out.

It gets infected every few weeks.. my gum and face swells up and i end up really sick.

I just got over the shingles which my doc said the constant gum infections has probably lowered my immune system.

I got a referred to a private dental surgen from my dentist because the medical card waiting list is so long.. but I just cannot afford the cost of a dental surgen. I have heard it can be about €600 to get them out.

Does anyone know an alternative to this. any other way of getting them out that wont cost as much.

Ill try anything.. Im in terrible pain.. and constantly sick

my daughter in late teens had an ongoing problem with one lower wisdom tooth - 3 infections v severe and 4 courses of anti biotics - flare ups just before big exams and one week before a trip abroad - decision was made as she was so worn out with meds. fortunatly we are in vhi and she was covered. it covers local anesthetic or general but not sedation - bizarre - and the matching top wisdom tooth - though healthy was recommended for extraction at the same time. she opted for local - braver than me - and hasn't looked back.

Iv spent all morning calling dental hospitals and health boards and Iv got an appointment to see the dentist today..

They can give you emergancy referral letters for the public dental hospital if its bad enough..

I hope I will get one!!

The national waiting list fund only covers you if your on the actual surgery waiting list.. But there is a year waiting list to get on to the surgical list!!!

Madness.. its costing the state 10 times as much to keep people waiting.. due to the cost of medication to keep the infections under control and covering appointment costs with dentists untill you get the surgery..

Why dont they just devide the waiting list up amoung the private and public surgens... allow the private surgens to claim for payment from the state.

This would clear the back log.. save a fortune on medication for those waiting. (one set of my medication was €135 for a week course if I paid over the counter, I got it on my medical card)

There is always the option of going north of the border which I and my family have been doing for ten years . There I find much of the work is half what it is in the Republic and root canals can be one third . The difference in price is I believe is cause by the fact that for lots of reasons there are too few dentists in the Republic and it has nothing to do with the quality of work being better here. I

You need to see a oral surgeon for this problem not a regular dentist (whether in the north, north pole, south or south pacific) There are several in ireland north and south. Usually wisdom tooth extraction is free with VHI cover. Its a specialist job with some significant risks. Specialist dentistry is more expensive everywhere.

Maybe get a small loan from the credit union and pay it back over 2 years it would only be about 40-80 euro a month.

ok - I had similar problem to you.

Same description of wisdom tooth and growing towards the jaw.

I went to the regular dentist who examined to see if it was fused to the bone.

    He explained:

The top two wisdom teeth are normally NOT fused to the bone and can be extracted like a normal tooth.

The bottom two wisdom teeth are nomally fused to the jaw bone and need surgical extraction.

You need to establish if the tooth is fused to the bone (as it is the top, you may have a chance), clear up any infection and whip it out. I kid.you.not it was the best feeling and the easiest extraction ive ever been though. I immediately felt better. Cost e115. I wasnt working at the time but I saved up 20 quid a week

The bad news is that I got an xray saturday gone, and was told that the bottom left wisdom tooth, IF it ever comes up is going to be a whopper and going to cause alot of problems. I did not want to know that. he said more than likely it will come up. Joy.
