Complete n00b here, I picked up a Macbook with a broken screen at a car boot sale for e20, I managed to replace the screen and to my suprise the machine worked. The problem is that I am unable to change some settings as I didn't ask the seller for a password. Can I reinstall the OS (10.5.4) the way you can in windows to overwrite old settings?

I did find this but I am afraid of breaking the machine.

boot the machine with the install disk and go to the utilities menu and then choose the password reset utility, and you can reset the password to one of your choice.

Thanks, I got a whole bunch of disks with the machine but I am not sure I have the right O/S. This world seems so strange.

You hopefully will have some grey discs that look like these two Macbook-Restore-Disk.jpg

If so then Bob's your uncle :)

Put the instyall disk in, restart and hold down the "c" on startup. This should allow you to to to ine installer. On the menu bar on the top, one of the options on it will allow you to change password.

^ I tried that twice and the disk spins and spins without booting the machine, the os on my machine and on the disk are the same os x 10.5.4.
