    Hi
I am looking for a Cheap MPEG4 STB.
I tried EBAY for a Sagem Picnic but could not find 1 for sale, where the seller will post to Ireland.

If anyone knows of a similar STB that does not cost a small fortune. please let me know.

Did anyone create an easy to read sticky or spreadsheet where someone can look at
All the TV's that have a MPEG4 Tuner, Average Price, How it can be sourced.
All the STB's that have a MPEG4 Tuner, Average Price, How it can be sourced.

Most of the Sticky's seem to be turning into Very long threads.

    Thanks

Wait till the shops have Saorview logo models.

it's too soon to buy a DTT box.

Unfortunately you have to speed read through the stickies as prices change and products are multiplying. Retailers in Ireland are slow to stock suitable products eventhough mpeg4 technology is widespread accross Europe.

DTT Box: €60 euro - SIGMATEK DVBR-520 HD Digital TV Receiver

It plays MKVs as well and you can record to a USB device. This is the cheapest out that is also half decent. I'd stay away from those no name boxes linked above.

I have a Sharp Aquos TV which has an analogue tuner and a digital (MPEG2) tuner. The digital tuner did work with early Irish DTT/MPEG2 trial transmissions but would not work after the trials changed over to MPEG4. I have a UPC subscription which includes Digital and Analogue signals. Until recently I could receive the Analogue channels via the analogue aerial connection on the TV and view them while recording to a PVR from a digital channel connected to a HDMI port on the TV. Unfortunately, during a recent move, the analogue input connector on the TV got snapped off, so I can no longer simultaneously view one channel and record from another. Fixing the TV would mean a visit to the repair shop and unknown costs.

My question is: will a MPEG4 STB pass a DTT MPEG2 signal to a digital tuner on a TV? If so, I could connect the STB to the digital aerial connector on the TV and watch any of Irish channels while recording another channel via the UPC STB and my PVR.

    Thanks for any advice.

An Mpeg4 STB will connect to the TV via Scart or HDMI. Just like a DVD player, satellite box, or UPC STB.

Most STB's have coax pass thru - so yes - I would expect the STB to pass it through to the TV with no issues. I think this is what you are asking about. Shouldn't hurt to try it.

A STB will not transcode MPEG4 to MPEG2 and output it on the RF which is what I think the guy is asking:

"will a MPEG4 STB pass a DTT MPEG2 signal to a digital tuner on a TV"

If he wants to receive Irish DTT, a STB will do that by connecting to the HDMI or SCART connector. The OP has a broken RF connector, so his analogue input does not work. With the STB he will not be able to receive TV3, poor fellow.

The only way you could pass the signal from the aerial would be if your Tv had that input. Thats the one you snapped off (so you have nothing to pass the signal to anway!). If only passes the signal from the aerial. The limitations of your TV do the rest.

You dont need to pass the signal from the DTT box anway as its connected by scart or HDMI for viewing. But before you go off and buy a DTT box to solve an analogue problem take a picture of the snapped connector on the TV. You should be able to just replace the rf antenna socket unless its a modular tuner unit.

Can be fixed easily for less than a euro I would imagine.

yes - apologies - I think you are right about the point of his question. Didn't occur to me since quite obviously the box isn't going to convert MPEG 2 to MPEG 4.

A bit uncommon to have two separate aerial inputs (analogue & digital) both of mine just have the one connector for both.
