    hi!
I'm looking at this course in NCAD for people who specifically want to teach art in school, which is what i'd love to do...but what I'm wondering is if you have a degree in art and your hdip can you then teach in a secondary school, or do you need another subject as well?? i know most teachers have to have 2 subjects, but I'd hoped art teachers just teach art and are not required to teach anything else... maybe you can do an add on year course in english or something if its required?
any advice or knowlege in this area would be great:)

I have only ever come across Art teachers who teach just Art and Art History. (Afaik sometimes these can be separate on school timetables.) It is possible that there are Art teachers who have another subject.

What you can teach depends on what you did in your degree. So if you wanted to teach both Art and English you would have to have a degree in both that is recognised by the Teaching Council. It is not possible be become qualified in a subject by doing a year long add-on course in that subject.

There are plenty of teachers, I'm sure, who just teach one subject. Most are qualified in two. Whether you teach a subject (Art in your case) on its own or with another subject depends on what schools need and what jobs are available.

To answer your initial question, if you have a degree in Art that is recognised by the TC and your dip then you are qualified to teach.

One of my friends from home did this course. She did her second subject as CSPE, As far as I know it was within the course but check with NCAD.

Having a degree and dip in art only allows you to teach Art. But art is considered to be three subjects, Art, Craft & Design. Depending on your school size, you may not have to take on another subject. In my school the principal gave me resource hours to make up mine. This year i also got SPHE. The teaching council are strict on what they consider being qualified. I looked at being able to teach history to Jnr cert level, seeing as most of the course would be similar to that of the leaving cert but i was told i would have to do a degree. The Open University courses online only apply to Maths and science subjects they told me as the course is much more straight forward. They are hoping to accept other subjects soon.

Education in NCAD can be attacked in two ways....
As a BA Degree, (first year being core! Here you will spend the year progressing through a mixture of rotations from across the departments of the college. Year 2-4 you will specialise in Art and Design Education) or as a one year H.Dip.

The four year BA will give you a solid grounding in the work that is required to succeed in the area of teaching this subject and although stressful, at least you come out with a wealth of experience. The H.Dip is a solid year of madness where you will have to cram as much in as possible but the huge difference is that you will have previously been able to bring your Studio Practice to a degree level! I know personally now at this stage going into forth year I would love to have the opportunity to develop this side further! Where do your priorities lie at the moment? What studio practice discipline are you interested in?
As Rebel said, Most Art teachers obtain employment with just the Art, Craft and Design BA under their belts and many will later take on added tasks like CSPE, SPHE, one to one work with students if required but I think they are currently trying to stamp down on qualifications etc for these!

    Pirate Girl....
    Id recommend a portfolio course!
Mine was an absolute godsend and I wouldnt be where I am without it!

I cant do a full time portfolio course because of work and such, but ive heard several weeklong intensive courses in different areas can be just as helpful in a much shorter timespan......hope this is true! im looking for some in galway now....

Where can you do a portfolio course during the summer and how long does it take to complete? My sister is very interested in art teaching and the portfolio course sounds like a really good idea.
