Got a few issues with Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. Help appreciated

    Hey,

I just made the move from XP to Ubuntu 10.04. I'm computer literate but somewhat of a Linux noob. So far I'm loving Ubuntu, apart from one or two sticking points that I hope someone can help me with.

    (1) I can't seem to connect to the internet. I've tried via both a wired connection and the vodafone mobile dongle (Huawei K3765) without success. I've gone through the network connection wizard but still nothing works.

Seeing as I'm just after formating my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens L1310g), do I need to install the drivers as you would in windows? I read somewhere that Linux installs some of these automatically on install so I'm confused as what to do next.

    (2) My laptops fan isn't spinning ever since I installed Ubuntu. It keeps restarting as it's overheating.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Firstly we need to see if ubuntu is recognising your wireless/ethernet card. Type lspci into the terminal and paste the result here.

secondly on the overheating issue, is there any dust ect. blocking any of the air vents.... more often then not thats the reason for overheating on a laptop

and as for drivers, when you get your internet up and running,
    next step sys>admin>update manager
get updates, then sys>admin>hardware drivers will get you what you need in most cases !
n00b tip ! then download ubuntu restricted extras from software centre for flash, codecs etc !

    Thanks for the reply guys.

I ran into serious problems with the fan and the laptop kept crashing so continuing working in the OS wasn't practical. I had XP on another partition and the fan would always start successfully when booting to XP, yet it wouldn't start at all in Ubuntu. I've found a lot of guys on another forum are having the same issue with the fan on the L1310g and Ubuntu. It's something to do with the way the hardware works on the L1310g and the Amilo series in general I believe.

At the moment I've removed 10.04 and I'm going to install 9.10 and see if the issue persists. I'm also installing Mint 8 to see what happens. I'll update after the installations.

    Thanks for the tips Bobby

Fair enough, best not to take any chances with fan problems.

Absolutely, long-term damage can be caused so especially of the laptop is new you don't want to risk it. I had a laptop whose fan gave up on me and that was basically it, I had to get it replace. Never thought about checking to see if it was the OS that was causing (but I doubt it).

Very strange that the fan should be affected by the OS, does anyone know how the two interact? Is it possible to view/control the interaction from the CLI?

Ya that's what I thought so it was best to just ditch 10.04.

The laptop itself is old and from today is a secondary one as I've just got a Dell Latitude D620 from work :) , but still I don't want to fry the L1310g. I've installed Mint 8 and it's working a charm, fan and all. I'll test Ubuntu 9.10 out of curiosity later on tonight and get back to you.

Google the words "L1310g fan ubuntu" and you'll get a whole load more on the topic.

In regards to my original comment, I believe the lack of internet connection was caused by not having an Ethernet port recognized by Ubuntu 10.04, auto eth0 , although I didn't get a chance to test if I could fix it as the laptop overheated.
