Hard wearing woodstain for decking?

Getting a new, raised deck done at the moment and now the question of protecting it from the elements has come up.

The deck is made out of D-rail planking (not your normal decking profiles as they retain too much water)

The main issue is that our dogs will be running across the deck and with their claws and dirty paws they had a bit of a sandpaper effect on the previous deck, causing the varnish to be damaged, letting water in, rotting the deck.

Ideally, I'm looking for some kind of coating that will effectively seal the deck and protect it from mechanical damage. I've seen some kind of plastic coating on wooden pub floors that seal it ...but I don't know what that is called and if it works outdoors. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Alternatively, if that can't be got, should I go with regular applications of standard varnish or is oil the way to go?

Any proven product recommendations (with source, if possible) will be gratefully received.

peasant, I have the same type of deck boards you have and it would be a shame to cover them up with a sealant that would hide the natural grain of the wood.

For years I was using your over the counter Ronseal or Cuprinol Decking Stain..every year it pealed, and had to be re-coated. Finally spoke to someone who specialised in staining wood and they told me that any water based product used on wood outdoors is not worth a $%&*

They recommended Sikkens products to me. So we went through a painful process of sanding down all the boards back to the natural wood.

2 Coats of Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus basecoat followed by 2 coats of Sikkens Cetol Filter 7

They come in 5litre tins for about €70/tin but it was well worth it. After 1 year and the harshest winter in decades the finish looks like new. Even when you compare it to the Ronseal or Curpinol stuff which is usually about €30/2.5 litres it is not that much more expensive.

Only specialised paint shops will probably stock it but I would highly recommend it. I went for the Oak finish but they have a really good selection of different colour finishes to choose from.

    Stillorgan Décor do Sikkens

However for Decking I have since tried another product instead of Sikkens which I find much better for decking. Its Osmo and can be got in various colours and its designed for decking

    McDonnells stock Osmo nationwide

I found a very good website for wood coatings, wood-finishes-direct.com.
They will post here for £15 for up to 20kg, I just finished re-oiling my deck and there was a local offer for Ronseal decking oil €39 for 5l + a free 5 litre deck cleaner.
If I had found the other website sooner I would have saved a considerable amount as their price was around 21 per 5 litre can.
20l will just do 2 coats of oil on the decks I have.
I do like the Sikkens CLS and Filter 7, I got some from a local paint shop and used it for the windows, very nice finish and good colour but not cheap but the coverage is excellent.
Decking stain and decking oil are two different animals, I am of the belief that wood outdoors needs to be heavily oiled to replace the natural weathering that occurs.
