They're on in the Millennium Stadium in 2011 and Twickers in 2012.

    Because it's tiny.

The Aviva Stadium didn't get it because it is only just completed.

Because they changed the name and forgot to tell the organisers of the Heino, who now can't find a listing for Landsdowne Road

This is ridiculous! not that i think that they should be held in Ireland, but I'm getting tired of the same stadiums being used to showcase European Clubs rugby finest showpiece. This is, I think, the 4th time each of these stadiums are being used.

Rugby is never going to spread with decisions like this. They should give the final to Italy at least, they contribute every season to the competition, have never hosted a final and have some great stadiums in which to do so!

Even aside from Italy, the game should be showcased around Europe, after all it is the European Rugby Cup

A little foresight though. Its ready now, so next year or the year after would have been fine.

They didn't get it because the UEFA europa league final would be on 3 days before, and the ERC weren't happy that the stadium could be turned around in that time, despite the stadium managers saying it was completely possible, afaik.

    Because it's tiny.

Au contraire, its big enough for a UEFA final.

I'd like to think that the Heineken Cup is a bigger deal than the Europa League!!!

That would depend on who's playing the ERC final. Otherwise its business as usual with the UEFA Cup.

They didn't get the 2011 final because of the UEFA final. They didn't get the 2012 final because the ERC wanted to tie in with the Olymics being in London.

    milan
    munich
    madrid

I'm all on for having big games in developing countries, but not when there is no local interest at all in the competition.

I know what it is. Its the UEFA Cup renamed.

6th time for Cardiff ... 4th for twicker... and why not Italie ???? these stadiums are fine but a bit of routine now.

I think i'm going to put money on Ospreys to be in the finale next year :D

Well it could help increase the profile in those countries. People are gonna be travelling anyway, (unless there's a Wasps/Harliquins final in 2012.) Why not have a nice trip to Spain?

How do you plan to generate an interest then?

I reckon that any Heineken Cup Final would sell out 70,000 regardless of who's playing. Whereas for a Europa League you could only be that confident with a 50,000 stadium.

People won't necessarily travel though, especially if it's two French teams in an away final.

Some do, some don't. Look at the one in Lansdowne a few years ago - it was barely even half capacity, and those numbers were probably flattered a little by Irish people going as well.

Yes but the profile of the Heineken Cup has risen significantly since then, and not only in Ireland.

While debate remains over which is a priority in France over the Top 14 and the Heineken Cup, the Heineken Cup is still a big deal there and their fans would love to see their team in the final. I'd be quite confident of and English, Welsh and Scottish teams filling the capacity too. If an Italian team managed a route to the final I wouldn't expect a huge following, which is further reason the profile of rugby should be enhanced at every opportunity like hosting a final

My point is that it's the second tier European competition, nowhere near as prestigious as the Champions League.

well it also helps when the draw for the semi final is done behind closed doors and low and behold 2 teams from the host final country end up with home draws in the semi finals...
i think Rome or somewhere in Italy deserves a final

I wonder would the San Siro be an option in the future. I'd really like to see Italy get one, even if their teams are unlikely to get to the final, but that didn't stop Murrayfield.

It filled out for the All Blacks match.

Cynic in me thinks that they dont need to hold it in Ireland because we are already nuts about HEC.

I'd love to see it in san siro or noucamp or something. I'd love a trip to one of those grounds.
Its not out of the question - Noucamp is not that far from Southern france where most of the great French teams are, and they filled the San Siro for the All blacks last year.

But a much higher profile across Europe regardless.

than the Heineken Cup??? I disagree.

I'm pretty sure Atletico Madrid returned some of their allocation this year despite not winning a major tournament in years.

Of course it is. Outside of the Six Nations countries (being generous here that Italians would know about it nationwide) and quite possibly some parts of municipal Spain, how widespread do you think the Heineken Cup or H Cup is?

the Europa League is a broader competition, but for the teams and fans involved the Heineken Cup is more presitigious than the Europa League is to Football fans

    Its because of the Mayans.

We didn't get it for 2011 because of the Europa League final on in the same week, and we didn't get it in 2012 because the ERC wanted to jump on the London Olympics bandwagon. What an amazing year to live in London, would nearly move back just for the craic!

Dublin will get it in 2013, but I think the GAA and Croke Park should table a bid and cut out the IRFU & Aviva.

I'd nearly prefer that it's played in San Siro or Camp Nou or something. I think Rugby needs to expand into developing nations and give them some top quality Heineken Cup rugby. Didn't Italy sell out the San Siro before to play New Zealand or someone like that? I'm sure it would sell out again for a Heineken Cup final from local interest alone.

I think Italian rugby needs to be given a major marketing push over the next few years with the national side in 6 Nations, the new provinces in Heineken Cup and Magners League, they need to start pulling in the crowds and growing the sport. France were very weak when they first joined the then 5 nations, and have become arguably the best Northern Hempisphere side for the most part. Italy could replicate this.
