PS3 on last legs. What can I do?

    Hi All,

Twice in the last week my PS3 has given a double beep and then crashed. Each time I have to hit the power on the back off and on to get it to come back on. And when it does come back on I'm expecting the Blu Ray to not work but so far it is still going.

    Its a Fat 40GB which I have a 500GB HDD in.

The first time it crashed I was playing Just Cause. The second time I was watching a DVD.

So does anyone have any advice on what I can do or is my PS3 on its last legs?

    Thanks
    Nedd

My first advice is to not put anything you wish to have trapped into it

Second, do a search of the forum and you will see many threads on this issue already

Sounds like your going to get ylod anytime soon as thats what happened to me! As Norrie suggested dont put anything in it you dont want to get trapped. Buy a new ps3 if you can afford it! :)

Hmm, mine occassionally crashes in a few games but can't say it bothers me.

Battlefield online every now and again, always in Fallout 3.

Same here, don't worry about it either. I think it only happens on Fallout 3 for me, no other game.

OP, back up your HD(if you haven't done so already), just in case.

I say trade it in if you can. I got €180 for my 60gig PS3 off a new Slim. Only had to pay a little extra for the Slim.

Id trade it in before its worthless

If you trade it in before you think its going to get ylod arent they going to try sell that on to some unlucky customer???

Are the second hand machines you buy in shops not guaranteed at all?

Hey Paul MCM....where did you get €180 for a trade in....cheers

Some bloke had a thread here a few weeks ago about taking a retailer/PS3 re-seller to small claims court over his launch PS3 that broke. Under the Sale of Goods and Supply act you're well within rights pretty much.

It's just not good enough for these machines to fail after only two or three years considering how much they cost! not to mention the money you've dropped on the games and periphials.

They are as Butch said in the Act!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,409 ✭✭✭Butch Cassidy

With 2nd hand goods you take a bit of a hit in your rights unfortunately. This is why I'd never buy a 2nd hand machine as it could break at any time outside of the gameshop's useless "guarantee".

    Some info from that site:
f goods are being sold as seconds or shop-soiled, however, you cannot expect the same standard.

    Second-hand goods

These must also be of merchantable quality but the standards are lower. If you buy something through a private sale, your rights are greatly diminished. Goods do not have to be of merchantable quality, they merely have to be owned by the seller and fit their description. It is up to you to check out the goods before buying.

I would imagine that with something like a console that has a history of problems like RROD/YLOD the shop selling it on even as second-hand would still be responsible for it to work even past their guarantee. But that's just my opinion. I really have no idea what would happen if you bought a PS3 and then after the 6month guarantee it breaks. That'd be an interesting court case though!

Mine does this the very odd time looking at videos or playing the odd game but very very rarely.

Sounds like it's just prone to crashing tbh... it can in rare cases be a precursor to the ylod but I'd worry about if / when it happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭macman2010

i had the same problem with my 60G. I started a few weeks back and only happened seldomly. This week however it turns off every 10mins. So get a replacement if you can. In my experience your delaying the inevitable complete breakdown.

This machine was a refurb i got from Smiths. I only had it 4 months when this happened. Luckily they agreed to replace it.

Just heard there that a mate of mine fixed his mates YLOD PS3 by putting the motherboard in the microwave and now its working!!!

    How odd is that?

    :D

It's moronic more like. Extremely doubtful you or your mate are telling teh truth here.

Well this is a brand new "Slim" PS3. They haven't any had light/ring deaths surely?

They should be replacing these with brand new consoles not previously broken and fixed up second-hand ones!

Just because it's not a wide issue with them yet doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. The PS3 Slim has error codes like any other PS3.

True they've been designed much more recently and we've been told that they're less prone to the YLOD but that still doesn't mean that there isn't a small percentage of machines that it's not going to happen to.

My PS3's fans are getting louder in the last couple of days . I'm thinking of trading mine in to Game or somewhere . I would only be getting another 40g fat as theyre only €200 now .

Do they ask you why youre getting rid ? I mean should I tell them the fans get louder after 20mins of playing ?

40 & 60Gig machines seem to be the one with the greatest failure rates. Why would you get a second hand/refurb one?

Is it possible that a game can completely fcuk up your PS3 ...........

When I play MW2 , I have all sorts of problems with the PS3 from it losing certain in game sounds to the fans actually getting quite loud
Then if I take out MW2 and play another game (MW1) I can play that for hours with absolutely no problems

Now the game is in bad condition tbf but can it cause the PS3 to run like its fit for the bin

    Hi everyone,

A little update on my PS3. Over the weekend it YLOD'd while I was playing Just Cause. turned it back on and it YLOD'd again. this happened everytime i turned it on. So i left it a day or two, turned it back on, did a HDD backup and turned it back off.

I'm afraid to go near it now in case it doesn't turn on at all.

I don't have the bottle to bring it in and try to trade it in, what happens if it YLOD's when they test it?

So it looks like my options are pay €80 to get it repaired and it could YLOD within a year or buy a new one.

    Are there any other options?

Buy a new one, at least you have an up to date back up. For an extra ~€150 you have a nice matt finish PS3.

Yeah this is what i'm thinking as well. What can i do with my Ylod Phat PS3 then? Any chance of selling it for parts?

Why do you not even try the smalls claims court?

Why do you not even try the smalls claims court?

The SCC is NEVER your first port of call, FFS guys.

    How old is it?

Contact the place of purchase, tell them that your system is broken. Mention Sale of Goods and and Supply of Services act or some such and see what they say. If it's about two years old, I'd be looking for a free repair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,043 ✭✭✭nedd

its about 2 and half years old at this stage. i dont have a receipt but i suppose i can give the shop a call and see what they have to say.

from everything i have read on here the shop will say its out of warranty and offer me a refurb for a price.

Did you buy it for cash or Laser or CC?
If by plastic, you can possibly get a statement to say so. If it's by cash, you would REALLY need a receipt. App you need is proof of purchase as the onus is on the place of sale.

Make no mistake, this could be a hard and long battle. A lot of companies don't like it when consumers try to enforce their rights. Expect resistance. Expect to be told you are wrong. Stand up for yourself. If needed, print out the needed information from the Irish Government sites.

Give them the option of repair, replacement or refund. Although I don't know if you can expect a full refund as you did have 2.5 years of wear and tear out of it.

    Not good enough for €500-600

I think what he's saying is that for a machine that only lasted 2 years and cost €600 at the time you wouldn't expect 'wear and tear' to break the unit.

But where is he getting €600 from? I got my 40GB Fat 2.5 years ago for €395.

I never said wear and tear would break the unit but you can't expect a full refund after 2.5 years of use. Well, you can expect it but only a judge can say whether you are to get it [if the retailer refuses].

Let's pretend that a refund isn't going to happen and concentrate on a repair or replacement.

The original PS3 was over €500 when it came out, I've seen people have paid over €600. I got my 60GB for €500 plus games I think in Oct 07
