Interesting occurance in the Pierce Purcell strokes qualifying round in Bray yesterday. Both sides marked their ball on the first tee but marks rubbed off in the damp grass and both were No. 1 Pro V1's. They hit the balls onto a par 3 green and couldn't figure out which was which. Called for a ruling from the GUI who advised that as they could not identify their balls the balls were in effect lost and they each had to go back to the tee and play their 3rd shot.

    Makes sense.....

Strange both markings came off, certainly wasn't a sharpie...

    +1 to that.
Unlucky, but at the same time incredibly stupid of both pairs to play with the same number ball, markings or no markings.

    Interesting situation.

I would imagine, if both parties had agreed to half the hole, they would be disqualified?

(One of the basic rules of golf is you cannot agree to waive a rule of golf!)

It was the qualifying....strokeplay, so halving the hole did not come into the equation.

Not a good example of agreeing to waive the rules of golf for a couple of reasons.
Firstly they were playing stroke and secondly in matchplay it wouldn't be breaking the rules of golf to have called it a halve afaik.
A good example of agreeing to the waive the rules of golf is playing partners in a singles competition allowing each other "gimmes".

Very annoying as it was probably obvious that both of the balls belonged to the two teams.

You should check the identification mark on your ball every time you tee off at each hole.

    That begs another question.....

What if a player is about to hit his 2nd shot and sees that the identification mark isn't clear or has been erased. Can he lift the ball and remark it? The answer is no (I believe) but what if he hits the ball onto the green and there's already another ball with the same make and number on the green? In theory he has the right to remark the ball even if the ball is in play.

    ..................

I said it was an "interesting situation", I wasn't trying to give a "good example".

Surely where one cannot identify one's ball, one has to proceed under the "lost ball" rule, rather than agreeing that "one of the balls is mine so let's call it halves!"

Tbh I don't really know what you mean by "one of the balls is mine so let's call it halves".

    A couple of corrections...

Neither ball had a marking on it to begin with.

A rules official had to be called over when one of the teams was unhappy to have their ball deemed lost.

Personally I find it inconceivable that some people still play without clearly marking their ball.

I Sharpie my balls (if you'll pardon the expression :D) and often have to redo it mid round.

I would say that if they realised what the decision was going to be they would found some kind of blemish or something on one of the balls ;)

What are the chances....tough call but a fair one in the end.

That makes alot more sense than both balls miraculously losing their markings after only one shot like in the OP
+1 to always using a sharpie.
