Swimming in canal

Hi, has anyone swam in the Royal canal in the city center? I'd like to get some open water practice and it looks lovely and calm and tempting. Apart from the obvious potential hassle from onloookers and the risk of getting tangled in a trolley, what are the risks? What is the water quality like?
    Thanks

water quality is pretty stagnant and nasty, also beware of weils, and hep. TBH I would avoid it like the plague it has the potential to be, you would probably be fine, but is it worth the risk of months of recovery or a sharps injury ????

Don't do it....Go out to Seapoint or Windsurfer pier near Dun Laoghaire for a swim.

weils and hep  the plague

A littel further upstream the Kilcock Triathlon is taking place this Saturday with the swim in the Royal canal if you want to pop out for a look (or a swim - registration is still open)
I presume the issues the others refer to are all city cente specific cos the organisers appear to have gotten a green for go from the water safety heads on this one

Thanks for info guys, I'm officially disuaded. Never considered the stagnant issue. Either way I think it was just looking nice because its recently been dredged. It's already filling up with mountains of rubbish again:(
