Grass cuttings and trees

I put grass cuttings around the trunk of a poplar tree that is about 5 years old thinking the grass would rot down and turn to compost eventually. This was toward the end of summer last year and soon after the tree began to look bad and the leaves wilted and fell off. I didn't think I could have killed it but this year there are new shoots at the base almost at ground level but the rest of the tree appears to be dead. Can anyone tell me why would this have happened?
