Hi, I was wondering of anyone could help me?
i am thinking of starting up a business in which I would make children's furniture and putting images of cartoon characters on it such as winnie the pooh and mickey mouse and fifi peppa pig etc. I would be advertising the furniture as handmade furniture with cartoon characters on it and leaving up to the client as to which cartoon character they would like and was wondering would I be in breach of copyright laws?

I wouldn't be an expert but I would imagine that you would need to pay for the rights to use these images! It's something that i would investigate if i were you!

As far as I know if you intend to use a copyrighted image in your work you have to ask for permission from the company to use it. I know that definitely with Disney you need to do it, they are very strict on copyrights.

Definitely check that out before you produce any. Could you possibly advertise and produce just generic characters such as teddies, fairies, animals, etc?

    Might help:

100% yes unless you paid for the rights from the various owners of the images.

There is a range of furniture already made with all these characters which was launched recently. From memory prices were very competitive - items included beds, table & chairs, desks etc. Retail prices were €60 - €130.

One option would be to buy already licenced transfers and sell these seperately to the furniture and apply them on the customers request. - This would probably get around the copyright issue.

OP I think it's more a trademark issue than copyright. You could get away with it if you were flying under the radar for a while but not a great way to build a business.

You could try photo stock websites to get royalty free images of cartoon type characters like this for example, if that's any use.
