O2 sim only broadband for use with mifi

I'd like to get a mifi router for use with my iPad and other devices with no USB port. I was planning to get a mifi with Three but since Im already on o2 with my phone I was wondering how much trouble I'd have getting an o2 sim working In an unlocked mifi?

As far as I can see , O2 don't do sim only broadband so my options are:

Get the 19:90 plan with the free USB dongle and put the sim into the mifi (is this possible?) I'm assuming I can modify the mifi settings in it's web interface.

Get a prepay dongle which I think I'd have to pay for and do the same without the risk of it not working and being stuck on a contract.

Is anyone using a mifi with O2?

Just unlock the Mifi (yourself), using a link on Engadget.

    http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/05/10/huawei-e5830-mifi-i-mo-blessed-with-unofficial-free-unlock-too/?utm_source=engadget&utm_medium=twitter

(I'm not going to link directly to the site within Engadget's article, figure it out..)

    Or use: http://www.dc-unlocker.com/ (safest method)

You should have no issues using an O2 SIM in it then, once you've changed the APN.

    --- Risky choice below ---

I would advise updating the firmware to one that supports the Admin Panel.

Here's a thread that gives you an idea of the Admin panel.

The firmware\software to do this is on the same site.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I actually found one unlocked on eBay that is cheaper than buying the prepay option from Three

Have a old 02 phone sim and want to give it a try with my mifi dongle. Do I need to change the sim to a broadband sim or will it work without doing this?

Thanks. I need an option for commuting. Don't really want to be dragging the laptop around in order to share its connection.

oh right so the mifi would be the only option then :D:D if you where just using the internet at home that software is good for sharing the connection!!its a pitty o2 dont do these dongles yet..they have a home router but its huge and requires constant power supply :(

Sharing the connection through the computer is not a very good idea either. There is no security, no routing, no port blocking, etc. Using a router is always a better idea. Even having the modem connected directly to a single computer, with no sharing, is not really that good.

There are LOADS of 3G dongle compatible true routers. The MiFi is the equivalent of travel kettle for Car cigar socket. You don't want one unless you have a WiFi only PDA/iTouch/iPad/PMP, travel a lot and have no netbook/laptop.
