I'm doing it, going into third year, not a mature student but know the process, my friend who is a mature student applied to do it. What kind of info are you after?

Thanks For the Reply.... Is the course fairly Intense like many hours? Is it as recognised as the UL degree in PE Teaching? many mature students in your class?

Its about 18-20 hours a week, but you need to be putting that same amount again into study and doing the work and stuff.

It is a B.Ed degree, which is recognised all over the world. It is the same level as the Limerick degree, but from what I've experienced, the Sports Studies and PE course is broader than the UL one

In my class, there are 10 mature students - the number of places increased last year, so I think there are about 12/13 mature student places available

Good to know that the ammount of Mature students been accepted has increased gives me a better chance of getting in..I will probably apply to UL and DCU aswell but i really like the look of the UCC degree as you said its broader and there seems to be a lot moe emphasis on coaching which would be of particular interest to me. What subjet have you chosen to teach along with PE as a matter of interest Rebel Girl?

    Hi
I'm thinking of returning to college as a full time student to study in UCC also, sports studies, level 8, to become a PE teacher. does anyone know if this course offers exemptions if I already have a level 7 degree in business? Any information about the course would be great.. Thanks.

It doesn't afaik, my friend came in with a business degree and did not get any exemptions iirc, though I can double check with her. What kind of things do you want to know about the course??

Thanks Rebel Girl, is it difficult to get into schools? from what i hear there is an overload of teachers and it's difficult to get a permanent job:(. Regarding Fees.. did your friend get a grant as a mature student? do you know how much the course is? Thanks Again.

The course is quite broad, so going teaching is only one option out of it. We do placement in three schools (2nd, 3rd and 4th year), so it helps build up contacts in different schools

I don't think she got any grant at all, because she had a grant before for her previous degree, afaik the course is around 9000 a year, it is one of the most expensive courses in the college and the most over subscribed one as well!

Hey Rebel Girl.... Just wondering what sort of things your friend who is a mature student did to help gain entry on to the course? did she do a related PLC course, have Coaching experience or had worked with Kids beforehand?? Just asking as I am wondering what things I could do that would give me a better chance of getting a mature student place?? thanks again for the reply..

She was actually teaching in a school for a year as a temp, teaching business, got asked to do a couple of PE lessons and wanted to go and do the course from that. Other mature students in my year are coaching underage and thats part of the reason why they wanted PE teaching over other subjects. The other girl who applied to get in for this year hasn't heard back yet, but she is heavily involved in coaching as well. She won't know till about the end of the month whether she got in or not

Getting involved in coaching is a good start or maybe seeing if you can shadow a PE teacher in a local school for a week or two - you can put that down on your personal statement for the course. It would also give you a good look at the daily life of a PE teacher.

    Congrats!

Timetable is already up here, I had about 20 hours in first year, and it looks pretty similiar hours, depends on what second subject you are going taking. From that it looks like a four day week for most, but they have left out the practicals, think its athletics (which is a Friday) and swimming (Wed?) in semester one and dance and gymnastics in semester 2. Even though you only have 20 lecture/tutorial hours (tutorials are compulsory, you sign in for them), you should be doing way more than that - we were told we should nearly take it as a 9-4 job, to get the most out of the course for you. They are changing bits of the modules every year as it is only five years old next year - we had Health module in first year that ended up with a lot of work, whereas this year it was a 2000 word essay. You have to be prepared to work hard during the year

Exams - I'm no 100% certain about how the exams are, but there is a physiology MCQ at Christmas, and your second subject and anatomy at the end of the year. There are also online practicals for anatomy

I've enjoyed it immensely, we've a great bunch all mad about sport - the other years are great for help as well. Most enjoyable is the great class we have, we have good fun and immense competition in the practical subjects (for exhibitions of dance, go to youtube and look up sports studies dance ucc and you'll find some of us!)

What I found least enjoyable was my second subject - we are in with the Arts people, and follow their syllabus, it is only in third year where you begin to do subject specific methodologies. I find it frustrating that a lot of the maths stuff I don't need to do and won't use it again in teaching, especially now with project maths coming in

I think they are dropping sociology as a subject! Don't be nervous - there is an orientation day specific for the first years where ye will meet Julia Walsh, the head of the Department and Fiona Chambers, the first year coordinator - you'll also have a student mentor from one of the other years as well

We'll have to meet up sometime - the boards UCC'ers have coffee mornings as well whoch is a nice way to get to know people from other courses as well!

Its no problem! In fairness, Fiona and the student mentors are very good - I forgot to mention that you will also have a lecture mentor as well, who you can email to ask about stuff as well! There is no hassle with things at all

Thats good that there is such a good support network...I guess the next thing to worry about is picking my subject...History or english...better at history in school but that was over 10 years ago..il try and find some arts students and ask them what they taught of each subject
