Wanted: New or used Matching Single Speed Wheelset

Hi, this is my first post. I'm here to try and source a new single-speed / flip-flop wheelset for a bicycle. I would also consider a good quality used set.

Does anybody have to sell or could anybody recommend a shop to source it from in Dublin?

Also, if anybody could direct me to a website with a success story and cheap delivery that would be great.

I am hoping to get entry level equipment, I'm not really interested in a fixie wheel.

    Thanks guys!

City Cycles have some fixed/free used rear wheels, fixed side is stripped so they're going for around 30/35.

    Look like this:

They also have the new ones of these in for 70 or can build you up a custom one of your liking.
The front is available for roughly 50/60

That's a good deal. If you have brakes (which you should) you can ride fixed without a lockring, it really is no problem.

    Hey blorg,

That's an interesting comment. My fixed cog came off and the threads on the hub were stripped after I met up with the others on the Boards Beginners' spin last Saturday. As I have both front and back brakes, I'm happy enough to cycle with the freewheel but I still miss the fun part of riding fixed.

I considered cycling fixed without the lock-ring but didn't think it would be a safe. Clearly you couldn't be doing skid-stops but what about track-stands? For me, there would also be the danger of instinctively skid-stopping before remembering that I don't have a lock-ring.

Folks, thanks for the info I was talking to the people in city cycles, think I will go for a new flip-flop rear wheel.

I want to set the bike up single initially and then have it so that I can be fixed if I want to.

Could someone explain (maybe with a picture) to a complete (but very interested) newbie diy bike mechanic what the function of the lockring is and what it means for the bike. It sounds like you cant rely on it to stop the bike if you want to lock the back wheel ?

The lockring goes on a seperate smaller thread to the Sprocket, and screws the opposite way. If you stop by resisting the pedals without a lockring you can unscrew the sprocket and jam everything up resulting in a possible nasty accident ! If you have a Lockring and the Sprocket starts to unscrew it just locks up against the lockring and does not come off. No nasty accident !
