Hi guys... Looking to upgrade my monitors. Have ordered some acoustic panels, In the middle of making bass traps and am now thinking about getting new monitors.

Am mixing in a small spare bedroom with M audio bx5a's. Looking to improve my set up and am thinking about a set of krk's..... or maybe yamaha hs80's. Looking at about 500 to 600 budget....

Anyone out there got any advice.. Cheers

If your looking for KRK's, this lad is an agent and he is dead sound.

Give him an email and ask his opinion.

I got Live 8 off him and was well looked after.

I think the KRKs are a load of cock - they look good though !

If you could stretch a little further you could get some Adam A7 or Focal CMS 50.

Monitors are a tough decision at the best of times but I try and look at entry level ones in two ways -

    1. Compare them to top end monitors (ATC SCM20s + my soupped up NS10s driven by Bryston Amplification) - an 'unfair' test directly of course .... but the job requirements are the same, to give you good info. Can they give you some idea of what's going on?

    2. Could I do a session on them? A personal outlook of course but some speakers - the KRKs and Yamahas just don't cut the mustard .... I'd have no idea what was going on.

Just for clarification I can sell ALL those brands.

    Have you heard them ?

We had a pair in for evaluation when they came out.
They didn't perform well . The low mids seemed way off .

Haven't heard them, but would like to. Sealed box, NS10 type thing. Did you A/B them with NS10? That would be interesting. I personally don't think ported speakers work for mixing. There are no sealed boxes for the OP's budget, excepting used NS10. The HS80 I have heard, they sound nice but mixes don't translate. I didn't use them in a treated room. I've done mixes on NS10 in untreated rooms and they did translate.

Yes, that's what piqued our interest.

However they've nothing in common sonically.

Theoretically a great idea, but the execution didn't hit the spot.

Cheers... Might just hang on for an extra paycheck and pick up the adams... Everyone seems to be giving them the thumbs up... Not much point in buying something and then realising it aint up to scratch in 6 months...

Adam a7x's:D just got mine 2 week's ago very impressed with them so far. Much more detail in the mids and highs than my old hs50m's much better stereo imaging and also much lower bass extension it was kind of guess work figuring out the lows on the hs50m's

Im not a fan of the KRK Rokits but I have a pair of VXT6's that I tried with a set of Yamaha HS50 and 80's.

The Yammies are really great. Very clear and true sounding. Definitely revealing. Best monitors in that price range.

The VXT's though are more expensive but have something else. The clarity in the mid ranges is amazing as well as a tight low end. The kevlar cones are really stiff but dont seem to be too heavy. If you have some epic source material to test it with, essentially something that has been brilliantly recorded, mixed and mastered then the VXT's will sound beautiful and do the mix justice. If you chuck some cheapo shizzle do like I have to you will know it.

The point Im trying to make is that to me they have the same true characteristics of the HS and NS Yammies. If it sounds good on the VXT it will sound good on most things and if you have a bad mix they wont pretty it up to make your ego blush.

For me the HS50 and 80's are best in their price range and better then other speakers up to the VXT6 area but after that for me the VXT's are a better.
Keep in mind I could only test the limited range of monitors available in Dublin. The M-Audio's are ok.

I had the KRK original Rokits pretty dodgy really, I have a pair of VXT6's they are pretty ok but as paul says stretch a touch to adam A7's or even some of the dyn audio stuff at that price range, poss pick up some passive PMC's for around 800 ish but need a decent amp, but they truly KICK ASS !
