I remember last year I used my phone to look up google maps when IK was lost in west Cork on the way to a wedding. I didn't have a data bundle and it ended up costing me 19 quid!

OP can I ask how does a sat nav work on the iPhone? Don't you have to be connected to Wi-fi or 3G internet? If so would it cost a fortune (even in a data package) the phone is constantly downloading a fresh map every few hundred meters?

    Hi,

well, like you said, with google maps, the app downloads the maps to your phone via 3g as you are navigating, which can work out very expensive.

However, with the paid sat nav apps such as ndrive, tom tom etc, the maps are all downloaded to your device and stored locally, so you don't need to download as your navigating.

Sunday Times recommended Nokia's Ovi Maps if you have a Nokia smartphone - once you download a map it does not need an internet connection (unless you want traffic information).
Does spoken turn by turn instructions too. Maps available for 180 countries.

    Cost: free.

But Google Navigation is free and has now been launched officially in UK/Ireland - yea only need to ensure yea have a data plan as it downloads the maps on the fly during use.

    No they don't!
Most gps systems have their maps stored locally. How do you think a Garmin or Tom Tom works?

Bought NDrive for my iphone a couple of weeks ago for 13.99, definitely thought it was worth the price then so at 5.99 that's a real bargain.

It might not be as smooth as Garmin but is a lot more up to date than anything else I've seen. With Garmin looking for over a hundred for updates, i reckon this a very good alternative.

Problem with downloading maps on the fly though is that I suspect you'd run up a hefty bill trying to use it as a gps abroad. I've tested it here and it seemed to work fine but would not like to have to pay roaming data charges with it. That's why I'll be testing the likes of NDrive, Copilot, Tomtom (when it launches on Android), etc..

Plus you also need a data plan. My missus for ex doesn't have a data plan for her phone so a cheap gps sw package which stores maps on the phone would be ideal for her occasional need for maps while out n about. The likes of NDrive for 5 or 6 quid would be perfect. Unfort in this case she also has an android phone so the 5/6 price doesn't apply :(

For anyone with an iphone though I'd snap it up.

Just downloaded this and it can't find a GPS signal. Their wobsite says it can take up to 50 min the first time, but I've had it on for 90 mins now and still nothing. Anyone else have the same problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭nicelives

Strange, might be a problem with your phone....obviously it won't find a signal in the house but outside or on your car dashboard it took less than a minute the 1st time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 223 ✭✭davef1000

Yup, that did the trick, thanks. I thought it might have been a problem with the app, since the Maps app was able to find a GPS signal indoors, but I've been recovering from a hangover all day so haven't been up and about that much. Finally left the house and Bingo! Signal. Will test it later.

Don't forget that your iphone eats up battery life when using GPS.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 223 ✭✭davef1000

It sure does! I have a car charger though, so I'm ok.

    From the itunes description page:
All map data is stored on your iPhone so you can NAVIGATE WITHOUT A NEED TO PAY FOR ADDITIONAL DATA DOWNLOADS.

    Sounds like a deal!

Would this work with the iTouch?

Don't think so. I don't think the itouch has gps built in. Open to correction on that though.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

What dowtchaboy said up there ^^^^^

OVI maps work well and you can download maps for anywhere in the world for free! So no data charges, no roaming charges, no anything charges and the application is free too. Total cost (even to a PAYG customer): €0.00

But I suppose they don't work on phones bought by people who prefer to pay for everything they ever use ;)

I can only see Ireland and uk mentioned. Can you download other countries if needs be, like Nokia maps?

    no built in gps

it is possible to hook a jail broken ipod up to a bluetooth gps using this app http://www.roqy-bluetooth.net/wp/ , only supports some bt gps hardware and app costs 8€

works with other gps apps, so should work with ndrive

reviews of ndrive seem a bit mixed but 6€ sounds ok?

I just bought it there and plan on using it tomorrow for work, review to follow. Worth a punt at €6

Don't think any of the IPhone GPS apps need a data connection, at least not Navigon / tomtom or any of the other big ones. Would be kind of pointless if you needed data roaming to use the GPS abroad, too expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Anyone used this with the TomTom cradle? I assume the GPS is enhanced by it?

Disappointed you can't preview the maps. As a rule I don't buy a map/upgrade unless my road is on it.
