ok so I understand the secondary teacher pay scale, but how does it work on a day to day basis

for example Ive seen a teaching job A(6 hours) and B(12 hours per week). Do these teacher get paid the same? I realise the job doesnt just entail the amount of hours spent in the classroom but are teachers paid according to the hours they teach or are they rewarded for it per hour? or is it as simple as the scale suggests

    any help appreciated, thanks

also my qualification allows me to teach Biology and Science however Ive noted a lot of the jobs naturally enough look for Chemistry aswel which I do have a good knowledge of from my degree. What can I do that would allow me to teach it? what are the ways in which I can make myself more appealing to a possible employer

and no bribery smart comments :)

You get a fraction of the pay if you do a fraction of the hours. That said, many people start on few hours and get given subbing hours once in the school. It's a lot easier for a teacher in the school to sub students they know than bringing someone in not known to the students. Best of luck! Making yourself more appealing, sport, music, extra languages, any extra qualifications etc...

22 hours is full time pay and what you would get according to the scale. Everything else as gaeilgegrinds said is a fraction of that. So if you have a job for 6 hours you get 6/22 of the point of the scale you should be on and if you get the 12 hour job you get 12/22 of the point you're on.

This is one of the things that is conveniently ignored when people are whining about teacher's pay. Not everyone who is teaching is full time.

There's no harm applying for those jobs, but if someone else applies with the full combination of subjects they'll probably get it ahead of you. There's a lot of competition out there at the moment.

The combination thing is important to note. I took up a position of 14 hours my first year and the other hours were given to someone else with the other subject. They only did this as we both had other 'talents' they wanted, principally sporting backgrounds. But sometimes jobs will be split. Not always. Drives me crazy when people give out about our wages, over half my staff are still parttime, some on 12 hours, work that out and they'd not be giving out too long!

Sorry, just happened to notice your post, are you a deputy/principal?
