My girlfriend is looking to buy her first car atm. As she's just learning to drive, she's looking for something small & cheap and has her heart set on a Yaris, probably a 2000 model (maybe 99).

Is there anything we should know about them? Problems or issues? I'd say they are reliable enough, as Toyota's recent problems are only with their newer cars.

Are there many different versions available i.e. different trims etc.... Terra, Luna, any others? Difference between them?

What price could she realistically hope to get one for? They range from €2300 - €3500 on Carzone for a 00. Cheapest on Done Deal is €1850, but most are €2k+ asking price.

    Any info most welcome.

A great little car but for me a Honda Jazz is a better buy, but don't let me put you off, the price you should pay is about 2000 euro and buy from a dealer if you can.

E models have 13 inch wheels, no power steering, electronics Windows passenger airbag or central locking.

Terra adds these items along with 14 inch wheels.

Luna adds fully painted bumpers, nicer seats, leather wheel and gearknob.

Sol adds electric mirrors height adjust seat, cd

No real.issues with them. Radios can be dodgy and water pumps get noisy at around 100k

Don't buy the entry level one, that's the one with black bumpers, looks really poor compared to the next levels with body coloured bumpers. I think it only had manual windows in the entry level too. Sol comes with a CD player it's the top model, not too many of them around. To fit a Toyota CD player will cost north of €300. Think the spec levels are Terra, Luna, Sol.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I read somewhere that they do not have a timing belt. They have a chain instead that doesn't need to be replaced. Is this true?
If not, when does the belt need to be done?

Yep, chain. No change unless rattly. Water pumps can rattle if on the way out.

Also the handbrakes have a problem of not adjusting properly.
So when you find the car you like, make sure the hand brake lever
isnt traveling too far back. Great little learner car.

Agree with everyone here. Probably the best small car around , and now prices have dropped to very affordable levels.
By the way ,no matter what car you are interested in check this out first
