My mum admitted to me that she's a feminist even though she's married to my dad!

This is a bit embarrassing, and I'm not too sure what to do about it, so I guess I'm just looking for some advice. And sorry about the mini-essay.

Yesterday I was chatting with my mum, and she was telling me how one of her friends was going to a feminists' rally that afternoon. I thought that was fair enough, as I don't really know this friend too well, so wasn't too shocked. So then I jokingly accused my mum of being a feminist too, and without even hesitating she admitted that she was! This came as a big shock to me, as she's been married to my dad for 17 years, and they have 4 kids together!

Plus now that I think about it, she does have a lot of traits of the stereotypical feminist: quite short hair, goes to the gym a fair bit etc, but the thought just never even crossed my mind. She said that she first got actively interested in feminism when she was at university in the '70s, which I guess makes sense. Probably most female students try it with a friend at least once after they've had a bit too much to drink, maybe for a dare of whatever, but she still has these thoughts at 52, when she's married with kids.

Now I'm completely open to these sorts of things, after all we live in a modern age when everyone is accepted, and I believe in the motto 'try everything at least once', but to actually have my own mum admit this to me is just really weird. I mean, if she's having these thoughts, why is she still married to my dad? It seems almost cruel, as I'm sure that he doesn't know, and I don't know whether I should tell him or not.

So basically, what should I do about this? Should I tell my dad? It would probably cause them to split up, but I guess he has a right to know. Or should I just keep it a secret, after all, I suppose she sort of confided in me, even though she was acting like it was no big deal. Should I be worried about her meeting up with the friend that we were originally discussing? Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I'm just so confused.

    Thanks.
