Career change to hairdresser

Hi, I'm currently working in the property sector, but I am considering a career change to hairdressing. I am doing a basic course to see if I like the job and the more time I spend blow drying and watching the client's face light up when its all done the more I want to keep going.

The reason I'm stumped is that my current role involves staff management, that bit is ok except they have been in the place years and are on (as I feel) a bullying and harrassment mission in order to force me out. The problem is not the job, rather the people.

I have made the decision to move on (and I am delighted with that), however I would like to go into hairdressing. I know that the pay is not great until you get qualified, but are job satisfaction and mental stability not more important than a crying mess most nights of the week.

I want to do something fun and funky, challenging yet rewarding, and to be honest taking a pay cut doesnt bother me but it does bother my husband who recently lost his job. We could survive on 2 low wages thankfully we purchased our home before the peak... but his reservations are me jumping ship so quickly into something that I may regret later.

Sorry for the rant, but any advice would be greatly appreciated (by both of us!):confused::confused:

    R.

Im 11 years hairdressing - believe me the pay is sh1te!

I love my job, I wouldnt give it up for the world.

I do know how you feel about where your working now though, I used to be the same with my old job.

Where abouts are you living? FAS do a course, its usually got a huge waiting list though. Also have you any savings? Private courses will have you qualified alot quicker!

Hi Princess lala, its the FAS course I'm doing, and the private courses are mental cost. We have some savings but that would just about eat every bit of them up, and with himself out of work, i'm just not so sure that's the best option.

I'd go for it, if the credit union gave me a loan, but I wont get any pay and will have the same bills and travel to pay. Then again I dont have to go to Athlone for college, but is it worth starting a potentially 4 year apprenticeship at 26/7 years of age..

Sack a couple of these jerks before you leave.

If your sure it's what you want then go for it, however make sure
those people at work are not forcing this decision on you.

Thanks Nervous Wreck, however we are employed by different employers which makes the situation very difficult to even (try) to discipline them. Dont get me wrong I'm by no way letting the position go to my head, but a bit of assistance wouldnt go astray and as the requests I make, are "not in their job descriptions" and no one at the powers that be are willing to make changes, then yes Miss 5 the decision is sadly being forced upon me.

The other way to look at this is, that well, would I have made the change if this situation had not arisen. Could I be stuck in this office for the next 20 years always wondering what if... Probably. Again, its not the job its the people.

I feel broken, disheartened and down and out, and tipping on depressed.this job has stripped me of all the joy in my life.

But when I'm working on hair I get that buzz I used to feel. I feel alive again. I want to keep that feeling.

I think hairdressing is a fantastic career choice...pay is crap if you are useless at it...it you are good and clients love you then money will not be a problem.
Go for it if you are passionate about it
