Amir Khan's US debut is in jeopardy after Paulie Malignaggi's promoter threatened to call off the fight over a fracas at the weigh-in.

Khan clashed with Malignaggi when some headpushing boiled over into a mass brawl. The two fighters shoved each other and Khan's fans weighed in, causing mayhem.

Malignaggi was knocked off the back of the stage into the hoardings and his promoter Lou DiBella claims Khan's fans should not have been allowed in. He says he will pull Malignaggi out of the WBA light-welterweight title clash at Madison Square Garden Theater if there is any more trouble. DiBella fumed: "This was supposed to be closed to the public. Did you see this s**t?
"My guy got roughed up and if there is one more thing like this, we won't be fighting. That's a promise."
Malignaggi said: "If Golden Boy had done their jobs, this would not have happened.
"He started pushing and all hell broke loose."
Khan's manager Asif Vali countered that Malignaggi and his team knew the weigh-in in the plush Essex House on the edge of Central Park was open.
"They knew the weigh-in was going to be open to the public," he said.
    "Amir is fine."
Khan weighed in half a pound heavier than Malignaggi at 9st 13lbs 8oz.

    Wow

    Meh, tbh.

    Hope Khan is KO'd

That stuff makes me cringe to be honest. Call me a dry balls if you wish, but it is clearly pre rehearsed bollocks to generate hype. I realise why it needs to be done, but it won't change my opinion that it's stupid. This isn't WWF.

Khan's fans were very rowdy and created a fairly hostile atmosphere, Islamic chants and all. Why people feel the need to bring religion into boxing I don't know.

I do wonder about some people who only support a person based on their ethnicity and/or religion.

Apparently the tickets were not selling well so I wouldn't be surprised if it was fake. The Mayweather-Mosley "scuffle" was completely contrived a few months back.

I can't help but feel incidents like this are just pathetic attempts to win back lost interest in the sport. It was clearly staged. This type of thing is more at home in WWE than in boxing. All part of the Khan script that has been carefully managed ( apart from his knockout blip). Not that this type of thing is unusual in boxing ( far from it), I just feel its been too obvious with Khan. When he fought Oisin Fagan I just lost all interest in him as a boxer.

Malignaggi is annoying but at least he's taken some serious risks. For that reason I hope he wins and brings this Khan carnival to a an end. ( Although my head tells me Khan will win)

Very smart move. That should sell a few more tickets. There's nothing new there at all, it's been happening since boxing began. Build up the hype, sell a few more tickets, generate more interest and maybe getting a few new fans in the process. Boxing is under a lot of pressure and has to keep up with the likes of UFC in the popularity stakes so a bit of controversy will do no harm. ;)

I hope Khan smashes him. As dislikable as people find Khan, I can't understand how Malignaggi is more liked. He is a pouting, posing, arrogant little bitch. All he does is talk, talk, talk, and let's be honest, he's not near good enough to talk like he does. Khan will KO him.

Khan is what, 22, 23? Give him a chance to take some risks before you bury him for being a "safe" fighter. He was destroyed by Prescott - it's hardly rocket science to know that he wouldn't be takin huge risks for a while after that. I'm not Khan's biggest fan, but I certainly don't hate him like some do. TBH, it does have something to do with him being English. If he was an up-and-coming American fighter, he wouldn't have half the amount of idiots on his back.

BTW, what time does this start on ITV? And is it just me or does Khan not look in tip-top shape for this?

what time is this likely to be on? can't sky plus ITV so may have to stay up..

There's not taking risks and then there's taking the piss. For me, the Oisin Fagan fight was taking the piss and treating fight fans like idiots.

Only four of malignaggi's opponents had losing records, thats why I have resepct for him. That said I don't like him or Khan as people. They are both fairly objectionable.

At the moment boxing is at a fairly low ebb. Khan isn't going to change that despite the propaganda. Although I do think he will win tonight.

2 twats of the highest order.

Malignaggi is a spoofer, talks, talks, talks, if he fought as well as he spoke he'd be the best in the business. He has always stepped up and fought the best opposition he could though. He showed alot of heart in his fight with Cotto.

Khan, although young, needs to keep his mouth in check. I'd be willing to overlook his hand picking of opponents for now, but if he continues to do so into next year then he'll get his dues in terms of criticism. The lad is not liked in the UK at all. I think he is trying to capatilise on this dislike for him by playing the bad guy, mouthing off about everything and everyone.
Maybe he sees a gap for when Mayweather hangs up the gloves, in terms of a guy we all want to see beat.
He is good but I don't think he'll develop into much more than a good fighter.

For similar see Prince Naseem Hamed. Found out by a hardened fighter who saw past the bluster, hype and bull****.

    He'll see off Paulie though.

ITV Show starts about 2.40, there is a chance we could have this fight about 3am - with it being in New York (-5 hours).

Hope its not the usual 4.30am....

I can see Khan winning this in the first quarter of the bout tbh.

Hatton gave him some battering.. He'll want to hold his hands higher than this.. This was November 22 2008. Good chin all the same, though Hatton probably doesnt have the same knock out punch that Khan has.

I gotta admit I'm warming to Amir Khan but he still has a lot to do. A pressure fighter would still have him on queer street, for a guy with a weak beard he is to easily hit.

Amir Kahn is also warming to Amir Kahn as Amir Kahn has taken a liking to speak of amir kahn in the third person. Is this a new thing or am i only noticing it now?
Very good win for him in fairness. He beat Mallignaggi convincingly in his own backyard which is a step in the right direction and desite criticisms I still think he is been brought along perfectly in his career.

    I agree nice steady progression...

as a former opponent said: World class skill, world class vunerability.

is steady progression a diplomatic way of saying his opponents are handpicked:p

99% of opponents are hand pick - even the greatest fighter that ever walked to earth PBF hand picks them.

That is what makes guys like Pacquiao fantastic for the sport...any fighter and time...

Well, i don't think that's quite true. Many great fighters were concerned with legacy so they sought out the best.
I prefer fighters who do that than the ones who try to cod you into thinking they seek to fight the best.

All careers are 'managed' that is why when guys like the ones you speak of come around we adore so much..

For example think of the top 5 fighters in the last 10-15 years, out of the 5 at least 3 or maybe 4 will have ducked someone...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 685 ✭✭✭Carlos_Ray

Khan was always going to win, but I was impressed with how he did it. Have a lot of respect for Malignaggi though. He has a great chin and tonnes of heart. He took numerous direct shots from Khan and never really looked stunned. Makes you wonder how effective Khan will be when he starts fighting the "big boys".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,372 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Khan did very well against a very tricky and slippery customer. Paulie did well for the firts 5 rds or so and then Khan took over. Khan still has improving in him, he is young and will get stronger. There are areas where he can improve. His judging of distancing looked off at times last night. He was
    over extending himself at tmes.

It was Khan's size, speed and range that did Paulie in.

Ortiz looked very polished and technical last night. His speed
and accuracy and fluidity were very good. He would be a tricky
opponent for Amir. I would like to see them fight soon.

Top fighters, like Benn, Tyson, Lewis, Eubank, Hatton, Calzaghe, Collins, who i have admired over the time period you mention, to the best of my knowledge, never ducked anyone. I understand a good manager wants to make money for his fighter before they are really tested. It's the few guys that avoid testing themselves against the very best i have a problem with.
