Biometric cash machine lands in Europe.

Customers of BPS visiting one of its ATMs in Warsaw have the option of placing their fingerprints on readers, instead inputting a four-digit code, to authorise withdrawals or other transactions, following the introduction of new technology this week.

The system is based on the recognition of the pattern of veins in an enrolled customer’s finger, a form of biometric technology developed by Hitachi. The technology is already widely used in Japan, but new to Europe.

I guess now that this will be the "way foreward" and we will see more of these spring up right across the EU and beyond.

People will register their biometric details voluntary into the data base in order to gain access their bank account. Eventually we could see chip & pin eliminated and replaced completly with chip and scan.

No doubt the Authorities across the EU and beyond will have live access to this database.

What's the problem with voluntarily giving your vein pattern???

How could this be used against you?

Civil liberties groupes and people have been fighting the idea of building up large biometric databases for years. now they will be conditioned that it will become a necessary tool in order to access your bank account. People won't bat an eye now, in fact they will think its great. If they were told that they had to go down to their local barracks and get their details registered there would be outcry.

Plenty, It is a lot more positive form to iD / track and trace than any chip and pin. Up until now you could have an alibi that you had your missus or mate use your ATM card. Not this time unless they chop your finger off.

If it was fingerprints or D.N.A I would be a bit wary but vein patterns are pretty harmless. I assume this is why they chose this method instead of more intrusive and controversial methods. It's just speculation that it will lead to a full biometric database.

Everyone knows you shouldn't use an ATM if you don't want to be traced. As it stands now almost all ATM's have CCTV so alibi's like that are shaky.

On another note I wonder will credit card fraud involve cutting peoples fingers off in the future.

I recon it will lead to thumb scan, seems like it is to be the internationsl standard, its on most passports, driver licences and ID cards.

Not just ATM's also the likes of Laser and other cash terminals that don't normally have CCTV.

More than likely dragging someone at gun point down to the nearest ATM and getting them to withdraw them being out of view from CCTV.
