Hi all. Just wondering does anyone know anything about old typewriters? I have a very old royal typewriter here. Works good too.;)

    Thanks in advance.

    If it was knackered, I'd have suggested tracking down some steampunk artists and they can use some of it for art stuff, like a steampunk keyboard;

T'would be a pity to waste a good, working typewriter though....

Should make about 80-100 in auction, if there's interest and it's working well maybe more!

You can put up the link to your ad here if you want. Saves people who are interested from searching. ;)

My father repairs and restores office machinery, and cut his teeth on Royal and Adler typewriters, I can get him to have a look at your pics and give you an estimate on current value if you like?

Hi Sellerbarry, sorry i'v taken so long to get back to you, completely forgot about it tbh.

Spoke to my father about your Royal, and judging from your pictures he reckons there's only a very small value to it. Its hard to give you an exact estimate as he doesn't know if its in good working order and usable, but he thought that +/-€45 was an average price. Apparently he knows of a guy in Dublin who has a stockroom full of old Royal typewriters that can't be shifted. Sorry its not better news!

Hi! I know this thread is quite old and I am late replying but I got here via a google search-

I am looking for a similar typewriter as a special present for someone- anyone still have one, or can put in contact with this man who has loads of them he can't shift? Would really appreciate any help anyone can give as this would mean a lot to some very nice people :)

    Thanks in advance!

    Alice.

P.S. Obviously, I should add, any other/older models would also be of great interest!

You should have no problem finding an old typewriter. Like old Singer sewing machines, they were built to last. There literally are thousands of them sitting on high shelves in olde worlde pubs all over the country.

Try the Golden Pages for architectural salvage or companies who fit out pubs.

I enjoyed seeing the pix of the old typewriters. I was in secretarial college in the 60's and learned to type on Royal, Olivetti and Remington typewriters. I loved the clickety-clack of the keys and the 'Ding' of the bell when returning the carriage, and the smell of the carbon paper and the black/red ink ribbons. But I didn't like the smell of the methylated spirits the mechanic used when he came to service them. Computer keyboards just don't have that kind of magic!

I am a retired TV guy and spent my life tinkering and making gadgets. Right now I am looking for an old junk typewriter, with the circular keys, as I am going to try the impossible. Yes I want to make a replica of the German WW2 'Enigma' code machine!

I have plenty of pictures of it but have not got the actual keys to make a fairly good replica. So I was delighted to read that your father knows somebody with a lot of them and I would love to contact him if possible.

How can I send you my phone and address as I have been in Boards for years but this is my first attempt at contact. Thank you and I hope for success this time.

    Tim.

I just recently bought a brother portable, from about 1970, however there's no letter 'o', any idea where I'd get one? :)

    Hi there,

Hoping someone might be able to advise me - I have a very old Remington Standard. Certainly appears more "desktop" than portable as it weighs a ton. It's not in great condition (has all the keys etc. but doubt it's been used in decades), and I had hoped to have it repaired but I'm not sure I can afford to right now as I'm assuming it'd be a hefty cost given the age of the machine - I reckon it's close to 100 years old at this stage. Anyway, I figured I'd see if anyone might be able to guess how much it's worth? Ideally I'd like to sell it and just give whatever it makes to a charity supported by the original owner. Any ideas?

Nowadays it is nigh on impossible to put a value on collectibles. There isn't much money floating around so it is really up to what one is prepared to pay. If it is very heavy then it will need to be picked up. Nice idea to give the money to charity , mind you. If it needs repairing then I would suggest 50 euro and only give it to someone that will repair or display it.
