Accident of some kind in harmonstown, gardai and fire brigade involved. They're being quite sketchy on details and just say it's very serious. I'm stuck on a train just outside harmonstown station.

My girlfriend was on a train from Drogheda to Pearse or Connolly and she heard there was a "fatality" at Harmonstown.
I haven't been able to get anything online other than an "incident" occuring..

Sounds like a suicide bid gone right.

I was saying the exact same thing earlier on. Even though someone chooses to end their life, the poor man had to sit and watch someone hurl themselves infront of a vehicle he was in control of. The services were back on track very soon afterwards though so perhaps it wasn't a death although "fatality" was mentioned.
I was on a train going to Sligo when we hit cattle and we were stranded for around the same length of time.

I was on that train earlier and the driver had to be taken off. Poor guy was traumatised. They got a relief driver in

Dear Lord, are you alright? I'm sure that would shake everyone involved.
Such a selfish person. Talk about altering another person completely with your actions.

NIR confirmed that it was a death on their passenger updates for Enterprise users.

Best not to think about it really, although we had plenty of time sitting there waiting for the train to move off. Just a shame someone felt the need to do it and also put the driver through it in particular.

If you don't mind me asking, did the incident occur when you were pulling into the station or right before hand? I just don't know how they managed to slip past workers to get a considerable distance up the platform in which to launch themselves at the train..

Harmonstown is either unmanned or the ticket office is on a bridge above the track. I can't remember which.

Well it happened just at Harmonstown but the train wasn't stopping there and wasn't due to stop until Howth Junction so it was going full speed when it happened and the train then came to a swift halt..we were stopped there til the Gardai allowed the train to move on, but it just crawled to Raheny to let the driver off and get another one on.

me and wife were on the first car of that train yesterday. the train did went fast during that time...at a very speedy limit i think...then, when we pass Harmonstown station approaching raheny station, the train gave very long and loud horn as if something was on its track....

Then we heard the metal scratching sound as if the train was using its brake to stop...then we felt a slight bump like it hit something....

Few seconds after that the train stop....the driver went out and put a red metal rod on the other side of track. my wife said the driver's face was trembeling and shocked....the driver went back into the driver room and make annoucement that we are gonna be late.

Then came the Dublin Fire Brigade....Gardai... then some people from Irish Rail I think....

we were stuck about an hour or so...couple of annoucement was made but none of it was telling the main caused of distruption. its either delayed, some distruption, apologies and so on..

when we open the top window to get some air...i heard one of the irish rail guy gave instruction to the driver to get gardai clearance before the train can move and it will be in couple of minutes.

when the train finally move, it stopped at raheny. they made the annoucement of apology and to change the driver. new diriver came in with the old one left immediately...and the train continued its journey...

we never knew what has actually happened...one of the passenger told me that if it was a suicide, they won't announce it and the press won't even covering in order to avoid copycat..

    sorry for my english...

Sounds like the driver did a stand up job after what must have been an incredible shock to the system, using the bar to close the track circuit and ensure no further injuries, then to make an announcement...I criticise the sh!t out of IE most of the time but this guy was a thorough professional yesterday.

I won't go so far as to criticise the deceased as who knows what mental problems they had.

It's one of the worst things to ever witness. (esp. at speed)

My thoughts are with the driver, and the family of the deceased.

Makes me so angry reading about this, I understand the person wasn't of stable mind but FFS could he not think of the driver who may never be able to continue his job again and also the people who have to take away his body, it's really very very sad.

Took me an extra hour and a half to get home yesterday, but hearing what happened really puts that in perspective. My problems barely register compared to what those involved must be going through.

I know exactly what you mean. I was on a Sligo train when we hit 2 cows and it was pretty scary seeing men trying to pull parts of the animals out from under the train and that really eery reversing where they have to creep the train back to get all of it out from under it.. Ugh, never mind doing this in association with a human's mashed body.
It must be so traumatising to see.

The night I witnessed it is still very fresh in my mind, over six months ago now...

Different people take the shock of differently, I was angry with the young guy who made the 'attempt' in Tara Street, But that was followed by the feeling of sorrow that someone was in such a state as to try to finish 'it' like that.

On the Toronto subway it is referred to as a "personal injury at track level" usually accompanied by a both-directions power off and a 60min delay. Before, you had to be on a train or platform but since twitter etc. it is shocking to realise how many of these there are in a month. The operator does have a program to try and recognise people like that but platforms are unmanned so I don't know how they think they are diverting many. There is also a proposal to fit platform doors but given the requirement to go automatic operation first (to make trains stop within the required tolerance) and the lack of capital available we are probably 20 years from it being sufficiently rolled out to make a serious dent.

I agree with the poster above - there are any number of ways to off yourself but to traumatise a driver and the response crew... Just think of all the guys who have started threads here about being a train driver, to want to do that all your life and then something like this happens to you and you can't face it any more and you're stuck behind a ticket desk or something for the rest of your days.

    ..

Personally I think it is a shame they don't release, in a dignified way when the time is right and if the family agree, details about the individual involved rather than sweep it under a carpet and pretend these things don't happen

I'm surprised that no one has once mentioned the family of the deceased. Thoughts are with them also as well as the driver of the DART.
