Live-in minder

We're moving from our house beside the hospital next year, I will be taking up a job in the university so it suits better. We were thinking of getting someone to live-in and mind our little one as we'll both work lots. Would we offer free accomadation? What would ye suggest? Could really suit a student as would only be two or possibly three evenings for a few hours and the odd Sat night?

An au pair might suit you if the hours aren't too long.
A live in nanny in Ireland would probably cost you a small fortune.

I think an au pair would probably suit best, you give her free accommodation and food (within reason, 3 meals a day!) and an allowance and she looks after your child.

If I was only asking for ten hours a week would it be fair not to exchange any moeny and give her free accomadation? It'd be saving her a hundred a week where we'll be living. Unless of course it'd be hard to get a student willing to live away from other students.

I would say not really fair, because she'd be very restricted, having to be "home" most early evenings on a somewhat unpredictable timetable from what it sounds like, ie not able to take late classes, go out right after college, or take an evening job. Also depends on what you can offer in terms of accomodation though- ie, if you can make it a definite "every Monday and Tuesday evening, and every 4th Saturday" or similar, and the student will have their own large en suite room with TV and is allowed guests, then I would say fair.

I'm sure there will be some older students very interested in free accommodation for 10 hours work but you would have to have set hours and forget saturday night as they would go home at the weekends. Anyway who is minding your child during the day? Just curious?

Well I'm on maternity most of the year, teaching in the evenings, either me or one of the grandparents. Mostly me though. It'd be max 10 hours, most likely 2 hours on a Tues and Thurs and every 2nd Sat evening. I could be better just getting someone to babysit I suppose but we've a few spare rooms, was thinking our granny flat could suit her.

To be honest with you if I was a broke student I'd jump at the opportunity of free accommodation in return for a few hours babysitting, even if it was only every second Saturday I could go out.
