Does anyone know if the J1 visa can be acquired from somewhere other than go4less or any of those places? I've been looking around and the flights can be got for quite a lot less independently than through one of those companies, but I don't know how to get the visa separately? Any help would be appreciated.

There are some companies in the US, including iicenter.org (highly recommended). Also you could look through these, I'm not sure if they are useful. I've never heard of anyone going through these to get a visa, but its worth looking into!

Don't know if they are any good but theres a (seemingly?) new company Travel Bug offering the programme, insurance DS2019, sevis fee, social security number all for 399 and you can book your own flights.
