No more root access needed :D

this, installing to SD card, and 450% performance improvement (I'll believe it when i see it) are 3 reasons i really hope that froyo comes to the Desire!

    1) Given HTC have a shocking track record of releasing updated ROMs on their Android phones, when do people think we can expect a HTC 2.2 Desire update?

    2) Will people like Paul at Modaco, or others at XDA be able to quickly develop 2.2 Custom ROMS for the Desire, or are there roadblocks in the way that I am not aware of?

I wouldn't be suprised by 450% performance improvement, looking through the source there is loads of area's where the code could be improved.

it has nothing to do with how the code is written really, only how the code is compiled/executed.

..makes me go back to years ago and the discussions on interpreter vs compiler.

    I feel old. :o

I don't doubt there is scope in the code for optimizations. For example if you do an market update for several apps, the whole UI goes very slow during the download and install so some optimization in that are will make it appear to run faster.

One thing about the wifi tethering that I'd like to know is whether or not the client access can be restricted. I used to use the free version of joiku wifi hotspot on my N95 until I was in the airport and I discovered a load of iTouch users using my connection.

whether or not the client access can be restricted.

Looks from the grab like you can set some security .. the phone supports WPA2, but in any real usage scenario even WEP would be enough to stop opportunists I would have thought.

there is always scope for optimization, in every code. what you're describing is the result of the relatively poor multi-threading capabilities of the majority of mobile CPUs. you can optimize the code as much as you like but the CPU will just execute as many threads as it can.

Calculations in the code have been optimized. :)

Yeah but a 450% performance improvement is still a bit

Not that I'm gonna complain about it tho iPhone HD/4/whatever might lol.

Is the supposed 4.5X speed increase not just as a result of the JIT compiler?

    correct

Does anyone know what eaxctly it will have an effect on?
As far as I can tell it only effects the Davlik VM which is where the applications are run so more processor power can be used for intensive things like graphics/flash.
    Or am I way off

Its an iPhone versus Android thing from an article showing the iphone to process graphics faster than the Nexus One despite having a slower processor, should have stated that, sorry :o

Will this enable the paid apps market?

To Ireland? I doubt it, that's a different issue altogether.

Oh, I thought an upgrade like that would enable it.

I hope that the release of FroYo coincides with the introduction of the paid apps market to the rest of the world. Anecdotally i know of a few people who won't switch to Android due to the abscence of paid apps. Most are iphone users who are used to itunes and want a similar scenario and the free apps aren't enough in their opinion to switch just yet.

Google have stayed very quiet on paid apps situation, they never reply to questions on it in their forums. With more and more Android devices hitting the shelves here i think it's time to lift the restrictions and let customers and developers alike experience it's full potential.

Has a valid reason ever been given as to why Ireland is locked out of the paid app store for Android?

Nope, just the line that the original markets for the Nexus One and paid apps were 'test' markets.
