Anyone else watch this tonight (Sorry I checked for a link on the Rte player but it's not there yet). Quite sad to watch someone talk about their hopes for the future considering the outcome. Very chilling to hear Gerry talk about the doctor who told him that him high alcohol consumption would lead to an early departure.

I didn't see that part. Are you saying that that this contributed to his death?

I cannot say that I got that impression myself.

I was asking the poster who saw the part of the programme, I didn't see it. Did you?

I watched the programme and the doctor did tell him that if he continued to drink alcohol at the rate he was, he would die sooner than later. This must have had some effect on Gerry Ryan because he told Ryan Tubridy that he didn't have that doctor on the show again after that.

Sorry I could not post a link. Basically Gerry was interviewing a doctor who asked him about his alcohol intake. Gerry admitted to a couple of large whiskeys of an evening. The doctor asked who poured them, Gerry replied that he did so himself as he did not have a butler. The doctor(whose name escapes me)said so 'you pour them yourself, so you mean they are trebles then?'. Keep that up and you are heading for an early death was the prognosis. Hopefully RTE will put it up on their site and you can have a look.

P.S. Mods feel free to delete if necessary, it was not my intention to pontificate about alcohol. I was just interested to see what other viewers thought of the programme.

You could see in the interview loadwise he was carrying more than most, however he had lost some in the recent series of Operation Transformation and load alone is not the be all and end all.
I guess there's no real ideals, your time is set and that's it game over, no reboot, gone from here from now.

I thought it was a good programme. You could see the hurt that his recent marriage breakdown had on him and I'd say he seriously regretted that it happened.

He didn't seem to think that alcohol would have any sort of serious or long term effect on him. It was just part of a culture at the time. Even with a warning from a doctor, he didn't want to hear this message.

For the record, I was a fan of his radio programme and he will be hugely missed.

I have to agree, I did not mean to cause offence or speculation. 3 of us here watching the programme and we were all a bit stunned and I was curious to know what others thought. I think I'd be happier if it was deleted. I would hate to start speculation and rumour.

    Thanks for paying attention.;)

Frankly I think you spooked the thread OP off the topic by reading implications into his post in the frist reponse that he clearly didn't intend. It seems like you yourself have heard some rumour and are overinterpreting the original post. I don't see why this shoudl not be discussed - the unwillingess of people to change unhealthy lifestyles is an important topic

I don't think Gerry was writing about what you highlighted.

I believe the chapter is called "I drink too much" (that's a FACT).

If you respected the author you wouldn't want to score cheap points over a thread on an internet forum.

Thats a FACT from the mouth of the man himself. For someone posting on a thread about the programme you don't seem to have watched it all.

He actually mentioned that on the show, that in the book he admitted to drinking too much

It is freaky to think about what was said to him and what happened. I don't think the thread should be deleted if we are discussing the contents of the TV programme. iirc the show was advertised as having unseen footage of the interview included in this one - lovely touch at the end listing all his family and his partner

I thought it was really sad especially when he was talking about how much he loved his family and wanted to see them get their education, jobs etc in future. Came across as a kind person and a really good Dad and I hope the family weren't too upset if they saw the program. I noticed it thanked them all individually in the closing credits.

He came across really well, a guy that cared totally about his family and was so proud of them. I really admired the openness about himself, that loyalty was so important to him as well

Well I think you are being over defensive of your idol. In fact I would go so far as to say you are trying to sensor debate here. Noone has said anything bad about Gerry so far in this thread.

Yeah, it was a side of him I had never really seen before. Just from watching him talk about them, you could see his commitment to his family was unquestionable, and the questions Ryan was asking about his divorce were really getting to him.

Yeah, the questions were getting to him, but in fairness he answered most of them no problem. There was a question Ryan put to him, so what if we did this interview in 2018, what would we be talking about?? And knowing that it will never happen is quite sad

I found the whole programme quite sad to watch. The Gerry Ryan I always knew was the guy on radio from 9-12 since my schooldays. I'd never really seen any personal interviews or the personal side of him until the programme last night. It definitely gave me a new perspective of what he was like as a person rather than the radio celebrity.

I wouldn't have listened to him much tbh, but I did follow the TV stuff he did, like Operation Transformation, how his show changed the lives of so many people all over the county!

It was a good piece. Despite Ryan's outward confidence and exuberance I think there was a lot of insecurity under the surface. This was evident from his reaction to criticism of his tv efforts. He took it personally and even admitted he was embarrassed by his action of writing a letter of complaint to the Irish Times once.
