I know when I worked in Apple that products bought in the Middle East had NO warranty cover. If there is warranty on the iPhone, you will have to return it to the place of original purchase for repiar if anything goes wrong.

    Dont do it!!!

A lot of products in the ME are reall bad quality compared to their European equivalents. And there was a report in the papers there recently about a lot of counterfeit branded products being sold in large department stores.

Any phone or other electronic device i ever bought while living in Dubai, never worked properly, and the arabic on the keypads and and profiles is just really annoying!
Im currently typing on a laptop bought in Dubai, with english and arabic on the keyboard, no euro or pound sign, the @ and " buttons interchange on a daily basis, so when i press @ i get ", and vica versa!
Dont even get me started on the numerous phones i have!!! They turn themselves off, alarm periodically doesnt work, the phone freezes, aaaarrrrrggghhhh.

It was widely believed that a lot of the electrical goods in the ME were made with substandard parts from eastern europe.

Here is just one example of fake Blackberrys

(Sharjah is the Emirate about 30mins from Dubai)

I've purchased a number of electronic items in the Middle East - phones, netbook, bluetooth gear and never had any problems.

The laptop I am currently typing this on is Arabic and apart from missing the Euro symbol, I don't have any problems.

However, a word of caution on purchasing in the Middle East - make sure you purchase from a reputable seller. I distinctly remember a thread on this forum some time back about somebody who purchased an iPhone in Dubai and it turned out to be a fake (giveaway was the USB connector at the bottom of the phone).

I would say that if you are familiar with the iPhone and well able to spot a fake, then go for it. However, with the Euro the way it is at the moment, are you really saving much by buying it in Dubai? I know here in Bahrain, the 32Gb iPhone 3Gs is selling for the equivalent of 680 Euro, so it is (surprisingly) cheaper to buy it in Ireland.

we bought 2 Nokia phones in Dubai in the Duty Free at the airport in 2006 and never had any issues with them, in fact we still both use them still, and having the arabic symbols on them, that doesnt bother me, just dont put it into arabic language by mistake or you'll have fun getting it back into English!
