Thought it would be worth a separate thread considering he's going for a record... http://www.irish-boxing.com/stories/may10/may10_cuba_boxer_perez.html

    Double trouble for Cuban Perez
    13 May 2010 - Press Release

Unbeaten Cuban heavyweight Mike Perez is promising double trouble on the Yanjing Fight Night in Limerick on Saturday as he bids to enter the record books by fighting twice on the same night in officially recorded professional bouts.

Perez features on the undercard of Andy Lee's clash with former European Champion Mamadou Thiam and he's hoping to make the boxing word sit up and take notice with an incredible double. Perez will open the show on Saturday night when he takes on Latvia's Edgar Kalnars and should everything go smoothly for the Cork based southpaw in that contest then he will be back in the ring for a second time in a matter of hours when he faces Tomas Mrazek from the Czech Republic.

Perez's participation in the second bout is subject to a medical examination immediately following the first bout by the Boxing Union of Ireland's ringside doctor but the man himself sees little difficulty with the task at hand.

“I think it's a great idea and when Brian Peters suggested it I jumped at the opportunity because I have had over a year out of the ring with an injury so I am looking to keep as busy as possible now and it doesn't get any better than having two fights in one night.”

Peters believes that the Perez double adds further spice to Saturday night's undercard. “Mike is chomping at the bit to fight because he has been out of the ring for so long and it's been very frustrating for him,” said Peters. “He's an incredible raw talent and he wants to start fulfilling his potential and shake up the heavyweight division and pulling off this feat on Saturday night will certainly cause a stir.

“Previously heavyweight legends such as Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey and George Foreman have fought more than once on the same night but they were always only exhibition bouts and were never counted as official contests but these bouts on Saturday night will be official and hopefully as long as Mike does the business they will improve his unbeaten record from 6 and 0 to 8 and 0.”

Haha those are some god awful records alright, can't blame them in trying to fast track his record, that looks like 2 KO's in the bag... he came into the professionals pretty late...

4sure but in fairness he's been laid off with a knee injury for a long time now so a couple of warmerups not a bad thing. although benny 2 of them in the ring at a time would make a decent fight and for a interesting world record

But baby pigeon said, I can't make it; I'll get too tired. His mother said, Don't worry; I'll tie a piece of string to one of your legs and the other end to mine.

    The baby started to cry.

    What's wrong? said the mother.

I don't want to be pigeon towed!

Good question. I've seen somewhere saying that the the record is 2 fights that both count towards his professional record in the same night. But don't fights in Prizefighter count towards it too? Some guys have already had 3 fights in one night.

Prizefighter was exactly what was on my mind too.

Prizefighter is 3 fights in a night at most, but your point still stands.
Perez has been out for a long time now and would have been fighting weak opposition(just Mrazek on his own) had Coleman Barrett not pulled out with an injury. Seeing as Barrett did pull out I think it's actually a good idea to get Perez to fight his opponent(Kalnars) aswell. It'll help him shake the ring rust and mean no excuses when it comes to an opponent next time out as he'll have had two fights to settle him back in.

Let's not forget Perez was due to fight http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=30936&cat=boxer until he got injured which would of been a big step up. Okay that was under previous management but once these fights are out of the way I think Hamish Thomas will step things up for Perez.

They've got Garcia his hardest fight to date in his fight back against a former European title challenger who gave Andy Lee big big problems, so it's not like they want to mollycoddle the Cubans.

Maybe statistically it is the first time a pro has fought 2 four rounders in the same night or something to that effect. I know the oppo's arent up to much but after been out for so long he could look back on this as an unneccessary stupid mistake. I'm sure Peters could have offered colemans opponent to another irish cruiser / heavyweight.

There's no other Irish Cruiser/Heavy available, well unless you count Sweeney but he's a Light-heavyweight(who should be a Super-Middleweight) who was only going to fight at a catchweight Cruiser fight with Timsey for the Irish title, there's no way he'd take on a man that big. Rogan is out recovering from surgery, Kenna was fighting in England last night, Barrett's injured, and none of the rest have fought in a few years. As for the Cruisers, Tims is injured, Corbett likely wouldn't take it, and John O'Brien has fought in quite a while.

So all in all there really wasn't an Irish fighter who could take the fight, and if Perez is really going to amount to something he should be able to defeat two fighters of that calibre in a night. Zack Page was a much higher level than either of them and Perez pretty much toyed with him(albeit in a frustrating manner).

Sean Mannion has a lightheavy/cruiserweight in his gym at the moment who he has been trying to get a fight.
My point is ok Perez is going to fight twice in the one night but dont try and fool people by making out its something spectacular wheter its scheduled 4 or 10 rounds we all know these guys are not up to much and will probably end early and if this is a selling point for the show then its not going to be up to much and as far as Garcias opponent is concerned his manager Patrick Thomas is pusing for these tough fights.

    Didn't know that cheers.

It's not a spectacular achievement but of course Peters as a promoter is going to make it out to be. His undercard has collapsed somewhat with the loss of his main undercard fight(Sweeney vs Tims) and also Katie Taylor's fight, aswell as Coleman Barrett being off. So he needed something 'special' to build it back up. It's not special, but you know what the promoters role is in stuff like this as well as me.

I agree you just put a good spin on certain fights to sell tickets that how promoters sell tickets. Would love to see TV3 come on board showing fights to give the opportunity for other promoters to compete with Peters would be great for the Boxing fan
