Foam Roller and PAIN!!!!

    Bought a foam roller this morning to use on my ITB, knee pain problem. I was using it at lunchtime and the pain in a couple of areas is dreadful, on the side of my leg (ITB) and my left calf. Its like rolling on a golf ball, I can't actually put my full weight on these two small areas. Any else experience this type of thing when using your roller and can you do damage by over-doing it?

    that sounds about right, would suggest you just take your time (about a week) working up the amount of weight you place on the most knotted points.

    If you bend up the leg you are not rolling and place the foot flat on the ground in front of you it will relieve some of the weight off the rolling leg until it eases off. You will grow to love it as when you are all worked out after a hile none of it will hurt a bit.
    worth it , so hang inthere . But dont do too much at any one go. Better for a minute or two during the ad breaks and do a bit every break.

    Oh, do you use it that often? I thought it was only after a run. One website said you should only use it ever 2 or 3 days as this allows the toxins to be transported away from the area:confused: Imagine misleading information on the internet:rolleyes:. A little and often seems right.

    where did you pick it up Gerard? I've been told to get one too, but warned that it'll be tough going at first until you start to release the worst spots...

    Close to the Irishtown Stadium. Just told them what I wanted it for and they cut it to size for me. €18.65.

    Yeah Gerard65, it hurts pretty bad for the first while, but you get used to it after a while when you use it regularly.

    The worst for me is the outside of the quads.

    If you damage your skin you get a scab which gets frictioned off with the activities of the day. When you have microtrauma and little scar repairs inside the leg muscles , they dont get broken down , stretched and finished off like on the skin. The foam roller does this for you.
    I wouldnt necessarily do the ITB every ad break but perhaps ITB one break Quad the next, calf muscles the next , hamstrings the next etc.

    Unless you watch TV3 in which case you still have time to do a full body rolling and make the tea and bake a cake and still have time for a snog on the sofa while the break is on:D

    Hurts more th golf balls ?? I've one on order that should have arrived today so sounds like lots of fun over the weekend.

    Ended up paying a fair bit more for a 'special' one! Not finding it too bad, a couple of spots which are worse than others alright and can't put all my weight on them yet, but can feel a bit of 'release'.

    I still use the rolling pin ;) the sound of crackling muscle is "Rambo" like lol

    It sure is painful. But as you said its like a good dose of drugs before an operation :)

    Just wondering when is the best time to use the foam roller, I've been using mine usually in the evenings doing a different muscle group each night. Finding it really good so far. But for the best results should it be done after training or can it be doen prior? Usually if I was having sports massage I would run before as I like to give it 24 hours after.

    Yes. you'll find it actually relieves tightness/discomfort after a while.

    I sometimes do it pre-run/gym sometimes, but mainly afterwards.

    You need to get a better person doing sports massage so.

    Ah not necessarily. I could be using the roller wrong/too much too soon etc. The massages are torture but the next day I'm more or less recovered. Legs were sore after using the grid.

    No Need to go out and buy expensive rollers, and the foam ones are usless, they wear down after a few weeks. Go get your hands on about 4" wavin pipe, (rain water pipe) it does a better job and if you know a any builders are free. Or you can buy a length for about a tenor and have enough for about 5 friends!

    Start off by not putting all your weight on it then work up the amount of weight you put on. You can use it to roll before and after a training session, but its also recommended to roll as a seperate session everyday.
