Advice needed - Contract role sold as Perm

    Hi,

    I need some advice please...

I recently applied for job and was told by the agency and the company that it was permanent. However I am now at the point of signing contracts and I am being told that it is only a 1 year contract with the possibility of extension to a permanent role. The agency swears that they were not aware that this was a contract role. But after 9 months of unemployment I was so happy to succeed in the interviews, I really don't know what to do.

I am extremely upset about this, if I wanted a contract then there are plenty out there, but I wanted the stability of a perm role and that is how this was sold. Now at the 11th hour I am presented with a contract role for which I will see none of the normal contractor benefits.

Is there any recourse to this situation or do I just walk away? Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

    hey dude,

Start getting realistic. You've been offered a job after 9 months unemployed - you'd be mad to turn it down just because it turns out to be a contract role. I don't know your personal situation, but dole only lasts 1 year, and mortgage protection is the same.

There are no guarantees just because you get a permanent role it will be permanent. Permanent and contract have the same notice period under 1 year (or is it 2?). In a permanent role - they could easilly punt you after 9 months.....

You could also continue to look for work whilst doing the contract role - and if you land a permanent role - use it as a negotiating tool with your current position (I've been offered a permanetnt role - don't want to leave - can you offer anything ?? etc etc).

    Go for it.

Thanks for that, I can see where you are coming from and I agree that a job is a job is a job. However the role was sold as perm and if this had been sold as a contract I wouldn't have expressed an interest. For me this leads to a lack of trust in the management of the company and as this is a senior position that is not a great way to start a new role.

    Thanks anyway:(

yes, it shows a lack of trust. The danger is that if you now say to them you are not taking the position, as it is not a permanent role - they could easily be sneaky, offer you a permanent role and then fire you after a year anyway. Difficult one. Take it, and make yourself indespensible !!

I agree, I guess in the current climate I will just have to grin and bare it! Painful all the same.

    Thanks

The only advice is to decide whether you want to take the job or remain unemployed for another 9 months. If another permanent job that suits comes up then apply for that while you are working.

Any permanent role comes with a probation period of 6 months to a year anyway and afaik you can be let go at any point within your first year of employment pretty easily and wouldn't be entitled to redundancy for your first two years.

After 9 months out of work you're fussy about a contract job as opposed to a permanent? Nice position to be in...
