Replacement Windows Dublin - Costs/Advice

I know there is a couple of similar active threads at the moment so mods please merge/delete this if appropriate.

I have a standard 3 bed semi in Dublin and am hoping to replace some of the old and draughty double glazed windows for something more efficient. I'm planning on changing the windows at the front of the house (Sitting room, double bedroom & Boxroom), a sliding porch door and sliding patio door with some good quality double glazing.

Would anyone have had a similar amount of work carried out recently and be able to put a guestimate on what this might cost before I start getting people in to do up estimates.

Also, so that I can compare like with like when comparing prices, is there anything I should be aware of other than energy efficiency and security features.

Finally, if anyone had recomendations on companies they've had carry out work recently, that would be great.

    Many thanks.

Obvoiusly start by getting some quotes, hard to comment on prices without sizes openings etc, but someone in a similar home might post.

I would suggest a few questions to the sales people,

    who manufactures the windows,
for example Senator, manufacture inwexford and only sell ( i think ) thur their franchises. Weatherglaze in Gorey, sell and install locally, but sell glazed frames countrywide. Frames Direct in Buncranna, sell unglazed frames countrywide. Camden, in N.I. sell glazed and unglazed coutrywide.

There are plenty of other manufacturers who sell frames, so you may end up geting three quotes for the same windows.

Security you have mentioned, ask about Fire Reg's. No one enforces the Reg's in replacment windows, but there are minimum opening sizes for bedrooms, look around your estate you may see mock bay windows upstairs, where the window is divided in 3, centre frame is pushed out as far as reveal allows and left and right frames are at an angle, these may not meet the fire reg's which are designed not just your family to get out but a fireman in full kit, to climb in.

ask about hinges, again fire reg's require bedroom windows to open past 90deg, you can also get Easy Clean hinges, which allow the window open to 90deg, the sash then slides to the entre of the opening allowing you to clean the outside without a ladder, great in a 2 storey, essential in a 3 storey.

À rated, tripe glazed etc have been discussed in other posts in this forum, you will find them useful.

good luck and please post details of quotes when rec'd

The above represents my personal opinions, and may not be agreed with by all

Thanks Martinn123, theres a lot of useful info there, especially in relation to the Fire regs.

I probably won't get a chance to get some quotes for a couple of weeks but i'll post them up as I get them.

In the mean time if anyone had recomendations on glazing companies i'd appreciate it.
