Does the engine turn over when you try to start?

Do you hear the fuel pump making a noise once you switch on the ignition.
Might be worth checking to see if its working.

Some cars require a RESET action after running out of juice AFAIK, not sure but Citroen/Peugeot springs to mind.

fuel filter could be blocked with the crap from the bottom of the tank

    OR

without knowing car, diesel Filter could need to be primed

sounds like dirt from the bottom of the tank blocking the fuel lines/filter. If your confident enough lift the back seat an take the petrol pump out of the tank. shine a tourch down and you should be able to see any dirt lying on the bottom of the tank. if its not bad just clean out/replace the petrol filter otherwise you'll need to take it to a garage and get a mechanic to check the pump and blow out the fuel lines.

this happened to me with an old vw vento before and i just disconnect the fuel line from the carb and blew it out with a compressor from the tank end. worked fine.
