I think you'll find that running an animated map on your phone while the screen is forced to stay on will cause most of the drain. Its best to leave it plugged into a charger in your car and not worry about it.

What I'd like to know is, say I was doing a journey from Dublin to Cork, wanted to use Google Maps as my SatNav, and had to keep 3G on for the entire journey. Does anyone know if this would cost a fortune, or would the size of the constant map updates be relatively small? Any help would be great.

Google Maps caches the route so the bulk of the downloading happens when you start the navigation. Any detours will require some additional information to be downloaded on the fly.
Download NetCounter to see your internet usage and test to see how much info is used when taking a journey.
I would be surprised if a journey like Dublin to Cork would require much more than 5 or 10 megs.

You could always try CoPilot rather than Google Maps which allows you to DL maps in advance so you don't need a data connection for your journey. GPS will run down tour battery fairly quickly though, in-car charger is the way to go.
