Desire - Out of space for new applications

Ugh, can´t believe there's such small space for apps!

So I read that you can install an app that installs apps on to your SD card, but you have to root your phone for it?

Is there a way of rooting the desire that does not require a Linux or Mac?
Also, one that doesn't look as complicated as root canal surgery?

Heh, where's the Blackra1n for Android...

It's not as difficult as it first appears - you can skip the Goldcard bit and if you sift through PAMG and Cormie's chat log you'll see it works fine on Windows alone.

I did mine on XP, and even with a couple of errors it was easy to go back one step and start over.

Or wait for android 2.2. It'll be out sometime in the next month

Yeah 2.2 looks good and seems quicker but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for htc to release android 2.2 on the desire.
The developers (cyanogen+modaco etc) will probably release their versions of 2.2 fairly soon and well before htc but you'll need to root your device to run those roms.

How does that work, isn't it a system update available to everyone?
Is it depending if the manufacturer wants to or not?
(sorry if the question seems noobish, but i'm still pretty much lost in these android waters)

Loggie, your link seems ace and simple, currently downloading the file I need to root it, I'll give it a go tomorrow!

Another question, if I root it and later on there's an official update, can I still update my Desire OTA?

HTC have to update their own software before they pass on the Android update to us. they're not usually very quick. But the Desire is selling so well I'd say we'll get it sooner than people think.

In fact, I'd be willing to bet they already have a build of Android 2.2 and are in the process of adapting their software.

I think you have to go back to the original software to get the OTA update but I don't know that for sure.

Because HTC run the sense ui over android they would have to modify android 2.2 to work with sense and so delay its release of 2.2. Don't know what length of time is involved but I think the htc hero is only getting 2.1 around now and thats around a good while now.
As far as I know if you root and don't use the stock rom you won't get ota rom updates. I could be mistaken on tis though. I'm not sure if the rooting prevents the ota or the rom. I think it is mentioned somewhere on xda but cannot remember where.

DJ you beat me to it .............

No, once you're rooted you cant get OTA updates.

Whatever you do don't install apps2sd, it's very hit and miss with the desire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,639 ✭✭✭PeakOutput

according to a podcast i listen to google have leaked that they are working on a way to install apps onto the card but no idea when it will arrive, sounds like 2.2 has it from the posters above but if thats not what they are talking about then it does seem like its coming

    Any other apps you recommend?

To replace APPS2SD? None exist as far as I know. APPS2SD isn't like any normal app that you install, it needs you partition your sdcard and it's very technical on the Desire.

Many people are now stuck in some odd type of undocumented testing mode where they can't connect the phone via USB and they can't use the sdcard because of APPS2SD. Many more got it working perfectly though.

Tbh, installing apps2sd isn't worth the risk. Android 2.2 is coming soon and that will give you the ability to install apps to the sd card natively.

Its working perfectly on my Desire (8gb,512ext3,rest FAT32, no swap) although I seem to get away with these things a lot.Consider me lucky chin

What are the details of android 2.2?

All we know so far is native flash support, native tethering & a JIT compiler.
Native Apps2SD is possible since the thread on Googles Code website has recently been updated to Future Release so it might make it in.
Googles I/O conference next week should reveal more

Hum, was trying Loggie's method (well, the method he linked to) but I ran into a problem, maybe someone knows what's up.

When going for Step 2, i get an "error: device not found" and nothing seems to happen.
The Desire screen just shows an image of the phone itself with a big red triangle with an exclamation mark.

Was scared there for a while that I had bricked it, but luckily seems I was only at the stage where I copied stuff into my SD card, no changes done yet!

(decided to root it cause it seems we'll get a 2.2 from the modders earlier than we'll get it from HTC, and I'm not that much in love with Sense anyways)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,054 ✭✭✭✭Professey Chin

would you be able to put up a screenshot of the error you get?
When your phone is rebooting before the red triangle it will disconnect then reconnect a few seconds after that appears(you should hear the notification sounds for this)

    Lets see if this works...
    Clipboard01.png

And yeah, can hear the usb notification sound, it sounds as it IS plugged in.

Step 1 hasn't completed successfully then.

Redo step 1 and try again. If that doesn't work you're going to have to do it via the tinycore method.

Then you're going to need to use the R3 method http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/308542/r4-htc-desire-easy-rooting-guide-with-tiny-core-linux/

Don't bother with Apps2SD for now as the FroYo rom was leaked and I assume it will be ported soon enough.

    Rooted!

Tried to do the commands in step1-windows.bat one by one instead of as a batch and that took care of it!

So does this mean when FroYo is ported I can just install it from a Modaco rom or something?

    Score!
Won't bother looking at roms for now, then, will just wait.

And cheers for that IM transcript of you and Cormie's, really helped!

    Not a problem!

If you want to keep track of the status of the port check http://android.modaco.com
