Can anyone tell me is it possible to buy pure aspirin anywhere in Ireland? The only thing I can find is Anadin which appears to be a mix of aspirin and caffeine.

    Cheers!

I suppose the natural question would be WHY do you want it?.

Ask in a chemist for a generic, it wouldn't have anything added in (I assume).

Failing that, reflux a mixture of Acetic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Acetic Anhydride for about 40 mins. Cool it to room temp, pour into some iced water, precipitate out the white solid and filter it off. Dissolve this in a minimum volume of hot ethanol, add a little deionised water and then cool the mixture to precipitate it out. Filter it all off and dry it for about 15 mins, and there you go, Aspirin!

I've a vague recollection that 5-10 years ago, the last generic aspirin was taken off the market as there was not a big enough market/Irish people weren't requesting it enough. I could definitely be wrong (either faulty memory or things changed since).

Pharmacies are starting to stock generics again, if you ask at your local chemist they *might* have some, but they might not. Alternatively, the norther supermarkets sell generic painkillers over the counter.

I pressume the right amounts of each ingredients would be necessary to carry out the procedure. No? :)

It's generally cheaper than the branded ones? That'd be my reasoning behind it, I've been looking for generic ibuprofen due to the cost of neurofen etc. with no luck so I stock up in the UK. poundland do generic OTC painkillers made by galpharm 3 packs for £1. It used to be possible to get generic aspirin in tesco here but I've not seen it in a while.

Generic aspirin is really cheap. 13p for 24 tablets of any of the supermarkets brands in the UK

The prices of branded OTC medicines are ridiculous. I've just moved back from London and I had to bring a stock with me. Generic medicines in the UK are 16p for 32 paracetamol, 14p for 24 aspirin, 32p for 20 ibuprofen, 49-89p for anti-allergy pills, £1.30 for 32 paracetamol and codeine. It's definitely worth finding a generic seller.

Generics have started being sold more in pharmacies recently but most of the time they have it in the dispensary so you'd have to ask. Try our local pharmacy OP.

By the way, melfen is a generic version of Ibuprofen.
